Sorry of this is a bit long, will try to cut it short. Had to collect 7 yr old DS from school on Tuesday afternoon as he had a mystery rash. The rash was pink/red and rough to touch. He suffers from eczema and had been swimming. School was understandably concerned that it might be the start of scarlet fever so I had to get him checked out. The gp said it was simply some reaction to the pool from his eczema. He'd been complaining of a sore head and throat on Sunday, which I told gp but she was determined there was nothing wrong with him.

Fast forward to today and little dd has a confirmed case of scarlet fever. She's had a high temperature for 2 days, which had lowered by this morning but she suddenly came out in a rash so dh took her to the drop in centre. She's now on antibiotics.

Am I worrying about nothing or do you think the 2 are related and maybe my boy did have scarlet fever? Would you complain to the surgery? I have to phone them anyway because I am 11 weeks pregnant and the hospital advised the gp might want to give me some antibiotics too just in case.

WW I do... I wouldn't want antibiotics for myself & most of us carry the relevant bacteria all the time without problems. From what I read, Scarlet fever poses no risks before late pregnancy.

I think it can be hard to diagnose, since your son is fine, I wouldn't complain.

So I would take care of my ill child & keep eye on rest of household.

It is pretty easy to miss unless the classic symptoms such as the rash and strawberry tongue are present at the time and a swab taken.

As your ds is fine, there's nothing to worry about. If he'd got worse, then I assume you'd have gone back.

And when dd2 had it then I didn't take her into the GP for a couple of days . Which was when someone else was diagnosed with it, I hadn't worried before that as she really wasn't very ill at all. The GP said no need for antibiotics as she was over the worst. And so I didn't worry about dd1 who also had it very mildly.

Rashes in children can be very hard to diagnose, you could mention it as a "for your information" way, but I wouldnt complain. Ds has had a rash that looks like sandpaper several times. It's never been scarlet fever. He does rash easily though.
