I've noticed today that ds (almost 27 months) has been scratching his bum A LOT! He's completely out of nappies now during the day so I can't see why he would have nappy rash. I've had a look at his bum and it is very red around his anus and also looks bruised. He said it was sore when I was having a look. Does anybody have any ideas of what it could be? Thanks Smile

Its almost certainly worms.

AlmaMartyr · 28/02/2015 18:19

Threadworms possibly? Normally itchy at night but easy to check for and quite common.

CarbeDiem · 28/02/2015 18:21

Sounds like worms.
I'm not sure why he would be bruised though. Could he have fell and hurt his bum in any way and it's now painful, hence the redness and touching?

gamerchick · 28/02/2015 18:22

Treat for worms. Thread worms are torture. . Just treat and make sure the while family get a dose as well.

Wash his bum to remove the glue that's causing the itching .

TheCowThatLaughs · 28/02/2015 18:23

Worms I'm afraid

juneau · 28/02/2015 18:26

I would assume and treat for thread worms as they're passed very easily between small DC who are notoriously rubbish at washing their hands after going to the loo and always touching themselves down there. Its probably worth calling your GP at 9am on Monday morning though to get him checked out, just to make sure. Take a look at his poo too, as they can be visible.

seaoflove · 28/02/2015 18:30

If he's scratching his anus very hard then it could explain why the area looks inflamed. I agree the first thing that springs to mind is worms.

abi2790 · 28/02/2015 18:37

Thanks guys. I thought it might be worms but I've checked and can't see anything but will take him to the gp on Monday and see what they say. I've just put a nappy on him for bed and he's literally trying to pull it off to scratch. It looks like he's trying to scratch his bum cheek though rather than the anus unless he just can't reach that far lol? but then that wouldn't explain the redness on his anus. I don't think it's actual bruising just the colour of dark bruising like purpley/ red.

Please don't make him suffer all weekend. You don't need a gp to treat him.

JaniceJoplin · 28/02/2015 18:44

If I were you I would not wait until Monday as they are so awful for DC if they get out of control. One of my DC had worms and she was completely demented with itching. They crawl out then crawl in so you don't have to see them. Horrendously itchy. The medicine can be got from a pharmacist easily called Ovex, I have driven to the pharmacy at 11pm to get it before! The medicine takes 24-48 hrs to work that's why you need to get it ASAP.

niceandwarm · 28/02/2015 18:45

Go to Boots or any pharmacy and get some worm tablets.

MissSmiley · 28/02/2015 18:46

You might not see anything but early evening is best time to check. If you think that's what it is you can get treatment over the counter at s chemist tomorrow, don't make him wait until Monday. He's over two so he can have treatment.
Otherwise only other thing is could be dire from not wiping properly. Sometimes after potty training they want to do it themselves and a bit of poo left on the skin can make it red raw. I would pop some metanium on him tonight after bath and get Ovex tomorrow.

MissSmiley · 28/02/2015 18:48

Sore not dire

abi2790 · 28/02/2015 18:48

Oh didn't know you could get it over the counter! I will go to the chemist tomorrow Smile

Get the family liquid for him and the tablets for the rest of the household. Then you have some handy if you don't manage to get all of the eggs that may be covering the house. Have a good clean and dust tomorrow to try and get them all and wash bedding on hot.

CarbeDiem · 28/02/2015 20:55

If you've got him in nappy Op - cover around his anus in sudocrem or something similar to help take the itch away (and suffocate the bastard worms coming out)
Yes to treating the whole family.
Nails cut short.
Get a nail brush and scrub his nails regularly, especially after he's been to the loo or scratching.
Disinfect anything that he's likely to have touched after touching his bum, including door handles, stair rails etc.
Wash Pj's and bedding on a high temp.
If he attends nursery - inform them so parents can treat/check their own dc and hopefully reduce the risk of passing them back to him.
My ds3 got them loads when he started nursery - I'd just get rid then he'd have them again. And again. And again.
Luckily the other 4 people in the house never got them but I was rather paranoid about them. They all started dreading having an itchy bum cheek, leg or anywhere in the bum vicinity general area, in front of me :)
