14 month DD had pneumonia in December so I'm ultra conscious of when she gets ill and she's had a cough pretty much ever since. She's had a temperature of 38.5-40 for 2 days now and the dr can't find anything wrong (same thing happened last time). Calpol and calprufen are doing nothing. Is this normal in babies or should I go back to the hospital and ask for blood tests again in your opinion? So worried.

Poor baby, did the doctor check her urine?
Sometimes it can take a few days for the actual illness to come out.
And sometimes the culprit of the illness is never found.
Try and keep her nice and cool, and as the meds are not bringing the temp down I would phone 111 to see what they suggest.
Hope your little one is better soon.

Try and keep her cool ds (2.10) has had a temp of 39.4-.9 since yesterday around 3pm just been giving him calpol/ ibuprofen, he's slept a lot hardly eaten but seems to be getting cooler may just be a virus she's fighting off

GW soon!

dreamingaboutcheese · 28/02/2015 06:09

thanks guys. yes there was nothing in her urine. 111 called us a paramedic but we waited 2 hrs and it never showed up/ hadn't been despatched so we took her to the walk in ourselves. they've given her antibiotics in case but I haven't given them yet as, as you say, there's a high chance it's viral. god it's so hard to know what to do for their best!!!

Poor little mite. I think you're already doing everything you can. Keep up fluids as much as possible. Never be embarrassed to demand medical attention a 4th/6th/8th time, as many times as needed until she's better.

JassyRadlett · 28/02/2015 06:25

There's a nasty bug going around -DS (3, so not quite as worrying) had 4 days of a stubborn high fever and a slightly runny/blocked nose, and that was it. Then the temp broke and he was fine. Fingers crossed it's the same for your DD - sounds like you're doing everything right.

Imperialleather2 · 28/02/2015 06:36

exactly the same here with dd 16 months. temperature and nothing else. This will be day 4 if she still has it when she wakes up.

dreamingaboutcheese · 28/02/2015 06:41

thanks for the reassurance. imperial, I hope your dd feels better today too. I think I'm going to watch/cuddle/keep her cool today and if she's not better tomorrow, take her to be checked again.

Most likely a virus. My children have all had this at some point. Very often when the fever goes, a rash appears.
I am currently battling against a vomiting bug. My ds who is nearly 7 has been sick as well as my dd who is nearly 4. My other daughter has currently a high temperature but no sickness...yet. I am awaiting the onset of it!!!! My dd is very prone to a high temperature. Was 39 today. Rotating calpol and ibuprofen as she seems resistant to calpol brining her fever down alone. My ds and my youngest dd have had the runs as well. Think its that norovirus. Its awful and so much washing!

TheSingingMonkey · 06/03/2015 11:59

DS had a high temperature for about 3 days, it was just a virus and settled down by itself. Calpol etc didn't make much difference and he and he was so grumpy. There wasn't much we could do but let it pass

There's no need to give medication if there are no symptoms. Paracetamol and ibuprofen should be given for the same reason you'd take them ie pain, discomfort. Just a fever with no symptoms does not require medicating.

A fever which does not subside after a few days does need checking out though and you can expect a thorough check of throat, ears, chest and urine to rule out infection. Mostly it's viral though and the fever is a good sign as the body is clearly fighting something off.

Keeping air circulating, loose clothing, sheets not blankets, plenty of fluids and tlc are all recommended.

We've had a whole range of viruses here. Vomiting bugs (rotavirus not norovirus), colds, coughs, burst eardrums, tonsillitis and as you describe op a weird virus which was just a fever and not much else.
