10 year old diagnosed yesterday with type one Diabetes

I thought he had a UTI but no. So we spent yesterday at the hospital and he's still in whilst his glucose levels get regulated and we get trained in the insulin side of things.

My son seems to be coping very well and treating it all as very interesting scientific exercise, I am however expecting the enormity of it all to hit home soon.

So, just wondered if anyone has any helpful words of wisdom for me or could point me in the right direction for information.

We've been told he'll be on at least 4 insulin injections a day and I administered 2 of those yesterday.

Also he's meant to be going on a school trip to France in May - is this likely to happen do you think?

Sorry for such a ramble and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

Hi

So sorry to hear that. It's hard for them when they get it so young. My dad has it and one of my close friends has it. Friend uses the pen injectors which may be cooler than syringes if he ever has to do it in public, spy style!

No reason why he shouldn't go on the trip so long as there's someone who really knows what to look out for: signs of low blood sugar (seeming a bit slow, vague. slurring words etc) and that this needs sugar not an injection (amazed how many people misunderstand this.)
Would be good if someone knew how to administer the injection for him, and if his closest friends on the trip were given some info.
He will feel so much better once he's on the right medication though.

Thank you.

Had a bit of an emotional day yesterday - he is generally handling it well and did 2 of his injections himself yesterday. But had a hypo and was sick and began to realise that this is for life.

He's hopefully coming home today and I'm meeting with the school and diabetes team on Monday to go through everything and then he should return to school on Tuesday.

It's rough at first but he will get through it. I was diagnosed type 1 at 14, and now it is just part of my life.

I would say whether or not he can go on the trip really depends on how he takes things. Some people will cope and be fine. Others will have more trouble or even purposefully refuse to do what they need to.

I would recommend getting your doctors to send you/him on a carb counting course as soon as you feel you can. When you give 4 shots a day of a standard dose it isn't nearly as accurate. When I was first diagnosed I gained 20 pounds because they put me on too much insulin and I kept having hypos. So if his blood sugars aren't where they need to be, get his team to adjust his insulin!

Also, once you have your head wrapped around this, research insulin pumps. They can be hard to get on the NHS, but are totally worth it. They tend to give them to children easier I believe.

Feel free to PM if you want to talk more (I'm crap and checking back on threads...)

There is a diabetes board on here. Hope your son gets home soon Smile

thank you so much! We're just back from hospital and will go and look at the diabetes board.
