Cradle cap!!!

Hello all!

My son had just turned 12 weeks. At 8 weeks I went to the docs as I was concerned with his dry skin and that he still had cradle cap. The doc identified he had excema and I've been treating with creams given. He still has cradle cap and although I know it is better, I feel awful that people keep commenting on it! It makes me feel really awful.

I've been using a cradle cap shampoo and as advised by a health visitor- put Vaseline on his scalp and left it on for 24 hours.

Is there anything else you can recommend? Or should I not be concerned that he still has it?

Thank you in advance.xxx

Hi, my children both suffered with this. My son had it till he was about 2.
Now I don't know if it was a fluke and it was clearing up anyway but I found that when I've used tesco baby shampoo he doesn't suffer with it.
Worth a try as it doesn't cost much. Hope it helps.

Oilatum shampoo, works a treat.

Our dermatologist told us never to use Dentinox shampoo.

A nit comb can be useful for lifting large pieces and removing fragments. You need to be ver gentlre, of course, especially with a 12 week old.

What was the reason for avoiding dentinox? I ask because I've just bought it. My cousin recommended coconut oil and gentle brushing but I haven't tried that yet.

He said it was like acid. DS did used to scream when I used it. Got told to use oilatum and the dry skin cleared up beautifully. We use it for DS2 now too.

My DD suffered with cradle cap on and off for years. I used dentinox shampoo but it didn't work.

My 10 week old DS had it a few weeks ago. I got some Boot's cradle cap cream, which is basically just lanolin and almond oil made into a cream. I slathered it on his head and eyebrows several times over the course of a day (stayed at home and applied it when he was feeding), and then brushed his scalp with a soft baby brush. So so so many flakes came off! Skin was left smooth and clean and there's no sign of it returning.

I think the best approach is to soften it with oil/grease, whether that's Vaseline or coconut oil or lanolin or cradle cap cream, and then brush with a soft brush. Do apply the grease several times to really soften before you brush :)

Good luck!

Dentinox shampoo worked for us, I can't bring myself to stop using it at 2 and a half! The other thing was coconut oil, which you can get in health food shops and is amazing for everything. We were advised to slap that on and leave it, then rub off with a muslin or dry flannel. Worked on the cradle cap but made his baby hair fall out!

Thank you all so much! Xxx

I was recommended to use a TEENY bit of head and shoulders shampoo, and it worked! Only had to use it 2-3 times and it was completely gone. Not sure how frowned upon that is by the medical profession though!

Mummytogoldie · 23/02/2015 20:57

Olive oil on the cradle cps then brush it away with a soft brush or scrape away with your nail the tough stuff ( I used to like doing this in a strange way lol)

FlyingPirate · 23/02/2015 21:03

I always found gently using a nit comb straight after the bath sorted it

Purpleflamingos · 23/02/2015 21:06

I always used olive oil to soften then let it flake out as I gently brushed after a bath. Put it on around 40mins before bath time so you can just use warm water to rinse the hair. Don't wash too often with shampoo.

Coconut oil worked very well on my friend's LO and also had the advantage of smelling nice. It softened and loosened the cradle cap better than the olive oil did.

Haylzey86 · 25/02/2015 22:55

My little man got it on his face all over his forehead. Doc prescribed canestan cream and within days it was gone

GettingFiggyWithIt · 25/02/2015 22:57

Another vote for olive oil and soft brush.
