Scoliosis diagnosed at 20 week scan

Can anyone please put my mind at rest?

Had my 20 week scan. The sonographer was very thorough, sending me off for a walk because wriggler wouldn't stay still for measurements. When we returned, she said she was concerned that there was a slight curve in the lumbar region, another lady was called in who confirmed they thought was an indication of scoliosis. They said apart from that baby was very healthy, lots of movement and skin intact,so they said all other indications are very positive.

We've now been referred to St Thomas' to have a further scan and see a feral medicine consultant. They said the referral is only because I was so upset and that our local consultant isn't available until mid March.

I can't remember anything that the midwife then told me afterwards, I feel so shocked Hmm

I've done the worst thing possible and Googled Confused so I'm turning to here for advice and positive stories, as MNethas been a great friend to me for many years.

Thanks for listening to me waffle x

Hi, just bumping this for you.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about scoliosis, but I hope everything goes well at St Thomas' hospital.

Thanks

I have a friend whose soon was born with scoliosis. I'm afraid I didn't know her when she was pregnant so don't know what was said at 20 weeks.

I know she's a Mumsnetter though so bumping in the hope she or someone else will see this.

All the best to you, I can well understand how worrying this must be for you.

Good luck op, bumping for you.

(NB feral medical consultant! Sounds especially terrifying! - sorry.... I know maybe not the moment to make a joke.. )

Hello, I am afraid I have no personal or professional knowledge of this myself but I just thought I would tell you that I knew a really clever, funny attractive person who had undergone a spinal operation for this in the teenage years. They went to Oxbridge, having got brilliant A-level results. The scoliosis did not restrict or dictate their lifestyle, aspirations or achievement. I hope you can get some more helpful info and support soon.

Hi not particularly knowledgeable about current guidelines but I have scoliosis myself so thought I'd give my perspective.

Mine was only picked up at school age and like your LO I have an issue with the lumbar region of my back. I Was monitored closely throughout childhood and there was discussion of a spinal fusion in my teens but as I'm fortunate to have a compensatory curve (meaning you can't tell I have a curvature of my spine) and it would have only been for cosmetic reasons we decided against it.

Things to think about- it is very variable in presentation some people suffer very much others not so much. They used to back brace children but I'm not sure what the latest treatments are. It can mean lots of hospital appointments.

Positives I have had a completely normal life and have been perfectly active. I haven't been monitored since the age of 18. Crap at gymnastics but otherwise all good. I've gone to uni, have a job I love and had a baby of my own. All normal things. I know a couple of others with scoliosis who underwent either bracing or operations and both are doing well.

Please try not to let this news take over everything. I say this because at my 20 week scan my baby was diagnosed with clubfoot in both feet. I was devastated. If only what I knew know then, that though bits were/ are hard it doesn't matter- she's amazing and doing great. Easier said than done I know! I hope the whole process goes okay for you and good luck.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis at 14 and had an operation to put a metal rod in my back to straighten my spine. Touch wood, I haven't had any problems since - I've had 2 children and am able to do most sports (except parachuting & horse riding!) and people can't tell by looking at me unless they look very carefully. I've no experience of it in babies, but hope it all works out well for you and your little one OP
