My 14 month old dd has had a permanently runny nose since she started at nursery in January. I'm not worried about that, it's just been 2 colds back to back, both of which she's passed onto us of course. The problem is that her nose and particularly the bit between her nose and upper lip are extremely sore now and I don't know how to manage it for the best. Every morning she wakes up with a thick dry crust of snot over her nostrils and upper lip. I've been putting vaseline on at bedtime to try and stop it sticking so much but not much luck. I've tried putting Bepanthen on during the day to help with soreness but it doesn't tend to stay on very long, either from me wiping it or her wiping her nose on my shoulder. The last 2 days the crust has been darker with flecks of blood in and some on her mattress too. Also sometimes when you wipe her nose in the day there's a bit of blood. On the extremely rare occasions you can see her skin through all the snot that is there 24/7 her upper lip is really red and has two red lines running from nostril to lip. I'm starting to think that what I think is dried on bogies is actually a scab and we should just leave it alone. She screamed bloody murder this morning when we finally managed to wipe it all off. I can't bear to have her toddling around all day with dried on bogies blocking up her nose but it's very hard to clear her nose without pulling the ? scab off her upper lip. We try to wipe her nose as gently and as infrequently as possible and use balsam tissues but once it starts getting down as far as her mouth you have to really. I had my family moaning at me yesterday simultaneously for not wiping her nose often enough and for wiping it too hard. Because of course it's really easy to do it gently with a wiggly protesting toddler!

Anyway, just wondered if anyone had any tips on managing this? Thanks

I would only wipe with a very warm cloth for the hard stuff and use a dry muslin to pat off running mucus during the day.

When staying in, just leave it. Also offer her the chance to wipe it herself.

The Vaseline always works well for my dc.

Vaseline. Very frequently. Just dab gently to soak up the snot.
Sudocrem is very good, but not if you think she may swallow it or get it in her eyes.
