DS has got this horrid fluey thing thats been going round - in fact I am at the tail end of it.

He's hardly eaten anything for 3 days now and although rallied last night has been even worse today. He woke up crying as his chest and throat hurt so much. He's got a very chesty cough (no crackling or wheezing) no temperature but a full on head cold too so just feeling horrid. Unfortunately as he hasn't eaten much and he is swallowing loads of gunk he's also feeling really sick and taking neurofen or calpol are making him feel sicker.

I have just forced about 6 mouthfuls of spag bol down him to try to line tummy a bit and given him sudafed and calpol but has anyone any other ideas of miracle cures??

He's just taken himself to bed as he says he feels so tired and horrid - he hasn't been this poorly since he was a toddler and i feel all at odds and ends with it

Both my sons have had a similar thing for the past few days. My youngest, age 5 won't take any medication and now has a really bad cough which sounded croupy last night. I've smothered him in Vic and have a kettle boiling away in the room (he's sleeping with me tonight) to produce lots of steam and try to open up his airways. Maybe try ice lollies for his sore throat and to keep him cool. Sorry, no miracle cures though! Hope he feels better soon.

Poor thing. I don't think there is much else in the way of medication an eleven year old can take other than what you have already given in. He needs lots of rest and his body has to fight the infection.

I suggest you make him a warm lemon drink with fresh lemon juice, sugar and hot water. The vitamin c will help him fight the infection. Something like Vicks vapour rub might help with breathing. If you son can be trusted not to scald himself then steam inhalation might help. A couple of drops of oil of oblas in the water for steam inhalation might help. (Oil of olba is toxic if you drink it)

I hope your son is better soon.

Thanks so much for your comments - actually I was still feel so rough that I went to bed soon after him.
he seems more revived today and may make school tomorrow - thank goodness it was just so unlike him, he just kept on crying saying he was so ill!

Thanks for your ideas - i'd forgotten about ice lollies as that would have been a good idea yesterday to soothe his throat and to get a bit of liquid into him
