This issue has been going on for sometime and it is now getting very stressful.

bit of background, dd (who is very nearly 5, yr R) had a suspected urine infection in November. The urine samples were inconclusive but some signs of irritation. After two different courses of ABs she did get mostly better but we have had problems ever since.

first, the ongoing problem was her feeling like she needed a wee straight after having one. She also felt the need to hold herself all the time. gp said this was down to possible irritation following the infection and needed to retrain her bladder. things did get mostly better again but never 100% back to how she was before the infection. Then two weeks ago things got progressively worse again..... This time needing a wee very frequently. urine sample came back inconclusive again. got worse again. She must have been for a wee 50 times yesterday. She is so upset and stressed about it. took her to out of hours doc last night. .. who said try caneston and calpol. nothing showed up on a dip stick.

referral to peads done but a few weeks wait. gp now agreed to prescribe ABs just to see if it helps.

I am at a loss about what to do. This is dominating my poor dds every thought and making her miserable.

anyone experience something similar or have any advice?

Get a referral to a paediatric urologist. My daughter (same age) has had recurrent water infections (no bacteria so not really water infections, if you see what I mean). We now see the urology nurse and have a prescribed medi honey barrier cream since Christmas and no water infections since.
Good luck

Thanks reindee. the referral has been done just got to wait for an app. no bacteria here either. .. so can it still be an infection? I don't really get it to be honest! glad your dd is getting prescribed something that works

ABs have improved things significantly (not perfect but soooo much better ). I don't understand why urine samples (included cultured ones ) don't show infection? ?
She has lost all confidence and needing a wee is still a stress for dd (and me!). and her poor hands are cracked and bleeding from all the hand washing Sad Sad

In the meantime (you may have done these...):

Is she drinking enough (concentrated urine irritates the bladder)? Should be getting somewhere close to 1.4 litres/day (if average size for her age). And needs to be spread through the day...which can be tricky with school.

Ban fizzy drinks, cafeinated drinks, and fresh citrus juices (acid irritates the bladder).

Check she's not constipated (constipation makes it harder to empty your bladder properly, leaving behind stale wee, which is irritatating to bladder).

Ban bubble bath (in fact, if possible, just wash with water...failing that, wash with products designed for people with eczema), and make sure taht if you wash her hair in the bath you do it last, so not sitting in shampooish water.

Oh, and barrier cream can be useful if getting sore.

Majority of episodes like this in kids are bladder irritation, not an infection, so don't show up on the samples...often one true infection leaves behind problems with irritation...

Thanks coolnames.
she drinks loads and loads as we (dh and I and school) have gone on and on about it!
I have stopped using soap to wash her there but will stop bubble bath too.
She only drinks water and the odd barley water (as recommended by gp). and have cut out anything blackcurrant and citrus.

ABs finished now. She is a little better but still weeing to the extent it is stopping her wanting to leave the house.

will chase hospital for the appointment as not heard anything yet.
I think you are right re irritation, but I need to know how best to handle it to minimise her stress but also try and improve things. at least it will be half term soon so I can keep a better eye on her.

Could it be this?

www.stlouischildrens.org/diseases-conditions/pollakiuria

I had the same issue with my DD (also just before she turned 5) and simply by not making fuss out of going to the toilet it has gone away.

If she is drinking loads and weeing loads perhaps she should be checked out for diabetes?

ewarwoowoo · 09/02/2015 09:25

diabetes been checked (dip stick) and all clear.
The info on that link sounds spot on to be honest. ... but doesn't explain why things get better on ABs. placebo maybe? and I still want to rule anything else out.... then I could be certain when reassuring her she is fine.

I do my very best to stay cool and not make a fuss about it. I just wish we could get out he house and do Fi things. even talk of sweets and the like don't get her out je house! with 2yo dts staying in all weekend is not relaxing Grin Grin

I don't know about in children but I had lots of 'UTI's" in my early twenties, definitely under 25. I didn't have bacteria showing on the urine samples but also got better only with antibiotics. I ended up having to have a chlamydia screen which was negative (I knew it would be) and radially thee symptoms passed and now I don't know when I last had this problem. (I also don't know if it was related to sex which is clearly not her problem!!) but reassuring her it will go away gradually until one day it's all gone may help.

Knowing when and where we could.stop for the loo and discussing this helped me- as an adult!- so may be worth a try!?
