Hi everyone, I really don't know where to start. My three year old has been in nursery since 9months, when I went back to work. He has terrible eczema, which plays up alot. (since he was very young) he uses strong steroid cream, and only have doublebase shower gel, and moisturiser as nothing else suits him. Recently he is constantly picking up infections. Hes had hand, foot and mouth three times, chicken pox twice, various chest infections, bronchitis, molluscoms contagious (almost like skin tags, not harmful) d&v. As soon as his skin breaks it seems to spread or get infected. I would just like to express that his hygiene is excellent, and my house is always spotless and clean because I try to avoid these things. I also use non bio fairy only for all our clothes. Anyway, hes eczema seems to be getting progressively worse, and I'm not sure what to do as docs don't seem bothered! I know its normal for children to catch infections etc, especially whilst in nursery. I'm just worried. Any comments will help! Xx

Hi there - sorry to hear you and your DS are having a rough time. At the end of the day, you should trust your instincts and push your GP for a referral to investigate further.

My daughter had dreadful eczema at 5 months and I was told by several GPs that she would 'eventually grow out of it'. After throwing my toys in Paeds A&E after another dreadful eruption, they took pity on me and sent my DD to the paed allergy specialist. It turns out she is terribly allergic to egg, which I never would have worked out. She went from a baby with red, blistering skin to a cheerful little girl in a month.

Not saying your son has an allergy, but something in his immune system sounds out of balance. You need a sympathetic GP who will help you to work out what's going on. Be demanding! Good luck.

Um, as a final point: have you tried a different washing powder? The non bio ones can still have a lot of perfumes in them, which are an irritant. I think Fairy smells quite strong, personally.

Thankyou so much for your advice, I will be going back to gp and ask some more questions. Glad your lo is ok now!
