Diabetes

My daughter who is almost 2 is quite thirsty. I used my husband's blood glucose metre (he is type 1 diabetic) to check her blood sugar and around 2.5 hours after eating, the reading came back at 10.4. Is this normal for a toddler? She had broccoli soup and smoked salmon and a small piece of french bread, cheese etc for lunch. I'm a bit worried so anyone who has young kids with diabetes please let me know what you think. Thanks.

I'd be calling your GP now (or OOH). The criteria for a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes is a random glucose test of 11.1 or over.

Have you got a ketones meter or ketones strips? If she has ketones you need A&E.

Maybe not clear enough there. Please take it seriously, do something about it tonight.

I agree with JBSL. I really hope there's another explanation (something on her finger?), but you need to rule it out immediately with a reading like that.

DS1 went undiagnosed for a while and was extremely poorly by the time he was finally diagnosed.

Yes, they can go downhill quickly at that age.

Yes, please get her checked!

I didn't do anything about it today but I did check her bloods again and she has some really weird readings. After eating it was 4.4 (immediately after eating) but then was at over 11 and hour later. She is plump and happy and totally normal. I don t want people thinking I am paranoid by I am really careful when checking her bloods and washing her hand first so I think that they are true readings, just maybe freak ones? How long can it take to come on and for those of your with children with tule one, how long do you think they had it enfore being diagnosed? No ketone strips just a blood glucose metre. My gut tells me this is nothing but I think I will call the doctor in the morning. Thanks ladies x

berry I took DS1 to the GP - he was excessively thirsty, bedwetting after 2 years of being dry, waking up in the night screaming for water. I had a close relative with T1, so I knew the signs. The GP tested his urine, which had no sugar in it, and sent us away. Two weeks later we took him back, this time they tested his blood and we were straight into hospital for 5 days. By this time his ketones were sky high and they told me that if I'd left it another 24 hours he would probably have died. So at least 2 weeks undiagnosed, probably longer as we waited a bit to go to the GP the first time.

It turns out that there is often no sugar in the urine, as it gets so diluted as the body is trying to flush it out, and it was therefore pointless the GP doing the test. A blood sugar test two hours after eating is the only way to tell. You have had two high readings now, so I'd be seeking some specialist advice, if only to rule out diabetes.

I'm not paranoid either, but I would hate for anyone else to go through what we did.

Tangerine, thanks for replying. I will get it checked out first thing. I'm so sorry you had such a horrible experience. I bet you were so disappointed with the support (or lack of) from the doctor. Fingers crossed it's nothing. Hubbie with type 1, our nephew was diagnosed with type 1 at 4 years old and I had gestational with dd1 and dd3 so we are more sensitive to it than most I think. Thanks again.

It sounds as though you know what to look for.

I watched DS2 like a hawk, although now he is into his teens I am less worried that he will also end up with it (DS1 was 5 when he got it).
