Is this worms? Yuk!

Hi sorry this is bound to be tmi

DS is 3.5 and has been complaining of having an itchy bottom 'inside' for a couple if days, lots of scratching. Sleep was very disturbed last night, unusual. The other thing is that he usually poos every day, but for the last few days he's had skid marks in his pants even when he hasn't been for nearly 24 hours. Last night he leaked a little poo in the bath before realising he needed to go - he has never done this before and has been potty trained for 18months .

Only other thing of note is that he is ridiculously tired ATM but don't think that can be related.

Is it 'just' worms? If so can I take anything while breastfeeding 9mo and can he be treated too? This is hideous, yuk!

I don't think you can take anything if you're breast feeding an under 2 as it's not been approved for use in under 2's. Your 3.5 should be old enough I think, do check though! Meanwhile you will just have to be scrupulous with hand hygiene yourself which will break the cycle if you did have them. I think some healthcare professionals recommend the Sellotape test. Wait until he's asleep and then press some Sellotape, sticky side down, onto his anus (charming) because this is when the worms come out to play. They are about 1cm long and wriggly and look like small bits of white thread. (Doubly charming)

Actually sounds more like he's sick and has mild constipation, which can irritate the anus and cause itchyness. Like piles.
If you want to be safe, wash all the bedding and wash everyones bums and hands morning and night for two weeks. That's their life cycle. Medicine is usually useless as reinfection is common within two weeks. But if you feel better you can give it to him and anyone else over two, then just use the washing technique. My kids got them and we got rid of them that way.

Interesting that you think it could be constipation. It's hard for me to really know because DH seems to get all the poos because of our routines - he seems to be around morning and night when DS does them - and I don't think he's as on the ball about bowel movements as I would be! It wouldn't occur to him to think about whether DS has been one day or not. I know he hasn't done a poo since last night and he's in bed already so that's over 24 hrs. And he's had skid marks today. Unless maybe he went at preschool. He doesn't tell the staff when he does so no idea! I get a bit anal (sorry!) about this sort of thing and want to crack it now if it is constipation as I know that can become a big issue with kids and he's had no issue with poo at all since he potty trained. Will get loads of fruit into him tomorrow. Actually a bit odd if he is as he ate 3 dates yesterday and that would usually set me off a treat!

Might treat for worms anyway...

Just treat for worms anyway and you and your baby will have to be treated as well. I just took the pill anyway and got a script from the doc for a powder to mix to give to my babies. Not sure if things have changed since then though.

If he's getting the intense disturbed nights you'll have to hot wash his bedding and all underwear as the eggs will be everywhere now. Shower first thing and nails scrubbed. Wash all door handles and anything else he could have touches like remotes, keyboards etc.

don't worry they're a pain in the arse but they happen.

dementedpixie · 19/01/2015 19:26

the pripsen powder has been discontinued so there is nothing licensed for under 2's to take now. If he has been having skid marks then itchiness could be due to dried poo on his skin. I would maybe treat him for worms anyway.

gamerchick · 19/01/2015 20:41

Yeah prispin shudder orrible stuff.

ilovetosleep · 20/01/2015 09:01

Can worms make kids really upset generally? This last week we've had tantrums unlike any we've had before, refusal to go to preschool, and just general umpleasantness. Wondered if it could be connected.

Yes disturbed nights make them grumpy.

CaroleService · 20/01/2015 09:28

There'as a bright yellow nappy rash cream (can't remember the name) that works a treat to prevent worm itching (caused by the worms coming out to play). Smear it on around the anus and the little buggers stay inside.

My son had worms a couple of weeks ago. He was really itchy in bed at night so I took a look at his bum with a torch and saw a few little white things wiggling around, yuk! May be worth trying this when he is in bed as they seem to appear at night.
