Baby vomiting every night

Looking for good advice!!

My 10 month old has started vomiting at night. He's absolutely fine during the day, but he'll throw up at night - just once a night - almost every night for the last week. It's usually just after his bath, when he's ready for bed, just settling in to my arms for his bedtime bottle ... Whoosh, up comes everything he ate that day (or so it seems). A couple of times he's been ok at his bedtime feed, but the same thing will happen instead at 10pm when I get him up for his night feed.

He doesn't seem to be dribbling much so I don't think it's commected to teething. He has had a bit of a cold and cough for over a month, but the vomiting doesn't happen after a coughing fit so I don't think he's activating his gag reflex by coughing. As it usually happens before he goes to sleep I don't think it can be mucus collecting in his throat, either.

I went to the GP today and she was flummoxed - told me to "keep an eye on it", which isn't terribly helpful.

Has this happened to anyone else's LOs? Please help!

Thanks

Make sure you give him plenty of fluids, if he shows signs of dehydration take him to A&E. Poor baby. SadFlowers

Is there a reason you are getting a 10 month old up for a night feed?

At 10 months (If there isnt a reason) he doesn't need a night feed

So thinking of reasons aforementioned sickness:

Maybe he is taking the milk to fast?
Have you changed teets?

Maybe his having to much?
Or he is still full up from Tea or a snack?

Is he getting any bath water in his mouth?
Is the bath to warm?

Wilfiesmummy · 14/01/2015 18:49

Thank you both!

SnowLondon, he has a bottle at 6am, 1:30pm, 6:30pm and 10pm - is that odd? We settled in to that pattern by reading his cues, really - no other reason! Do you recommend a different schedule? Those are all good questions and thank you for them - he has supper at 5pm at the latest and doesn't usually eat much - lunch is bigger. We haven't changed teats recently and he doesn't seem to be guzzling his milk; in fact he rarely finishes a bottle completely (200ml bottle). The bath water is an interesting one: we have a bath thermometer and the water is never above 37 degrees. He also sits in a sort of bath seat so it shouldn't be getting into his mouth - though I'll definitely keep an eye on it when I pour the jug of waster over his head to rinse off shampoo ... good call!

Are these Formula feeds?

If so, that is alot, and maybe why he doesn't eat much?

I would try to drop the 10pm feed I think, as 3 feeds are enough where he is also eating solids

SnowLondon · 14/01/2015 19:36

I would personally do this:

6.30 Bottle

7.30 Breakfast

9.30 small snack (fruit/ breadstick)

11.30 Lunch

1.30 / or When awake after lunch time sleep.. (Half a bottle feed)

3pm small snack (Fruit/ rice cake)

5pm Tea

6.30 / Just before bed (A bottle)

Obviously everyone is different :)

Is the food coming up unchewed? I ask as my DS vomited a few times at bedtime around a similar age and noticed that the food being brought back up (usually pasta) was still in fairly large pieces.

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/01/2015 19:47

I would suspect too much food.

I'd drop the 10 o clock feed and space out the food.

say bottle at six , breakfast around 8.

lunch at 12.

bottle around 1.30. but reduce slightly if he's not drinking it anyway.

tea around half 4/5.

then bed time bottle. half 6/7

Gileswithachainsaw · 14/01/2015 19:49

Although neither of my Dds had a lunch time bottle at that age.

between lunch and a two hour afternoon nap there was little time to actually get hungry between wake up and tea.

so bottles wee basically 7 am and 7 on and three meals a day.

milk was in form of cereal and yogurt and maybe a rice pudding/ semolina during the day.

There was a time my baby was vomiting every night after the last bottle. The problem was the last bottle. We were overfeeding.

If it continues you might consider an allergy. My DS did this and we kept thinking it was something else, too much food, bath water etc. It turned out to be a dairy allergy. Stopped that and the vomiting stopped. Keeping a food diary might help you see if its a possibility.

Wifiesmummy I know this is a very old thread hut we are having the same issues!! Did you ever get to the bottom of it?

Thanks

Wilfiesmummy · 17/03/2015 13:13

Hello Limesmum, I'm so sorry to hear that - we never did get to the bottom of it, really. After a couple of weeks he just grew out of it. It didn't seem to be a question of the quantity he was eating or drinking - I wonder if perhaps his tummy wasn't quite in step with his dexterity and his wish to explore foods that were more solid/textured? He's right as rain now and I hope your little one is too very soon! Best wishes xxx

My nephew experinced similar symptoms, vomitted up his entire days food every night, at 18months he was diagnosed with celiac disease (wheat intolerance), my sister had to really push for him to be tested.

This may not be the case with your DC, hope you get to the bottom of it soon.
