Can you get health insurance just for children and is it worth doing?

DS has a lot of different disabilities and health problems. After his recent appalling stay in hospital I decided to see how much private health insurance would cost for him (and only him paid by his DLA) but I can only find adding him as an addition to mine.

Is it even worth it? Or will I be facing the sort of autism discrimination I face at my local hospital anyway?

I don't have private health insurance by the way. It just seemed the only option was to insure me then add him on. I don't want private health insurance, I don't care about me

Even if you did find a policy you need to consider that they may exclude pre-existing conditions which if he has already had quite a bit of treatment could be very restrictive.
Also whilst you might get private consultations many private hospitals do not have paeds nurses so in patient procedures may end up happening in NHS hospitals anyway.
I do have my DD covered though it is on my companies group policy, but I know the two local private hospitals do paeds in patient procedures.

I see. Excluding would be no good as they're the reason for needing it. I didn't know that about paeds either thank you. I have no problem with his general paediatrician he's amazing. It's the nurses that were lacking (think forgetting his meds even after being nagged for them and not allowing for alterations for his disability which made me have to take him home and order home care which was less than ideal)

I'mwatching this with interest, but in my experience of 'is it even worth doing' is 'no'. My DD was under mine (which I got by paying for but via work) for a number of years. I took her off because I rang them up and ran past them the consultants (7) and care that she needed (lots) and it turned out they didn't cover any of it apart from one leg op she'll potentially need in 5-10 years. I can't remember the wording, but it was essentially along the lines of 'we only do quick fix ops', nothing developmental and nothing complicated/specialist paeds. It wasn't about the conditions being pre-existing, just simply that they were beyond their scope. I was a bit surprised. Wish that the NHS wasn't struggling so much at he moment - makes it very hard sometimes.
