Ds has a very swollen eye about an hour and a half hour after taking neurofen

DS (9 years old) woke early this morning (pre 6am) and complained of a bad earache. He has had had a bad a cold so I thought this was probably related. I gave him some neurofen to help him get back to sleep and at that time his eyes were not swollen. I also asked dh (who is home with him today as it is half term) to call the docter if his ear seemed worse later today.

Just as I was leaving for work at 7.30am Ds came downstairs with his right eye almost swollen shut. At the time I thought it was related to the ear as it is his right ear that was hurting and didn't really remember that his eye had been OK when I gave him the neurofen at 6am. DS seemed fine apart from the swollen eye and said his ear felt better. DH said he would call the doctor at 8.30am when they opened. He has since seen the doctor who has given antibiotics for the ear and also antihistamines as they thought thee eye might be related to the ear problem or might be an allergic reaction to something.

I have just now remembered that his was Ok before the neurofen so am thinking it must have been an allergic reaction to the medicine. DS has had both calpol and nuerofen before with no problem. I haven't given him any neurofen for a long time though (probably a couple of years) as he has not needed it. He has had calpol in that time, though again not very often at all, maybe a handful of times in the last couple of years when he has had a bad cold or been in pain .

Does anyone have experience of a child with an allergy to a painkiller? If so is this the sort of reaction they might have?
