Worried about ds 29 months diagnosed with bacterial tonsillitis not had much to eat since Friday

Ds started being sick on Thursday night bringing up his dinner etc he was sick on and off through the night but only once on Friday. He did have toast, water but would bring it all back. When he was sick again on Saturday we took him to the out of hours doctors they diagnosed bacterial tonsillitis and put him on antibiotics.

He seems to be up and down in how well he seems but is eating very little. Sunday he ate little but kept up with his fluids and wasn't sick. Yesterday he seemed better but was sick again around 9pm whilst complaining that his tummy hurt. He woke up in the night twice complaining on tummy ache but has not been sick since. All he has managed to consume this morning is a small glass of milk, water, a pot of custard and some raisins really I'm offering him anything just to get him to eat the porridge and weetabix have been left untouched.

He's had his antibiotics and gone to sleep but should I be trying to make a new appointment at he doctors or just keep up the fluids and forget about trying to get him to eat something.

If the antibiotics aren't working I would go back to doctor.

But fluids are the important thing. The GP won't worry unless he hasnt eaten for weeks. He will probably eat loads when he feels better. I'd just keep giving him fluids.

It's possible the anti biotics may be making him feel sick/have tummy ache - especially as he is not eating much. Do they say to be taken with food?
certainly try and keep the fluids up - ice lollies are quite useful in that respect. My DCs used to like having straws in their drinks if they were poorly for some reason.
If it's tonsillitis, his throat is likely to be very sore so eating/drinking will be difficult. How about ice cream to help numb the pain.

The antibiotics are on an empty stomach or 60 minutes before food. Will offer some ice cream perhaps he will try if he sees it rather than me just asking.

Will see how he goes and obviously try and get as much fluid into him as possible.

thanks for the advice

Don't worry about food an keep up with the fluids. He'll be fine without food for a week providing he wasn't underweight before he started being sick. I was told this by a paediatrician when 5 month old ds had gastroenteritis and didn't have anything but water for a week.

Antibiotics take a few days to start working and its doubtful the GP would give something different till tomorrow. Keep giving him antibiotics and regular paracetamol an ibuprofen and take him to the GP tomorrow if he's still no better.

His throat will be sore which could be stopping him eating and being sick won't help. Ice pops and ice cream will help hydrate him and numb his throat a bit.

Lots of ice lollies will help - the cold numbs the sore throat, and slow amounts of sweet liquid won't irritate his tum but provide fluid and energy

Tonsillitis really hurts so we were told to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen (following dosing instructions obv). Offer food about half an hour or so after meds, and really for now just anything he'll want to eat.
Go back to the gp tomorrow if there's no improvement. I used to just leave drinks all per and snacks out so DS would just have little and often. Hope he's better soon, it sucks!

Thanks for the replies. Ds has had more fluids this evening and some yoghurt, he turned his nose up at the ice lolly saying it was too cold. Smile We've kept up with the paracetamol and antibiotics even though we have to force him to have them. I think its just going to take a little longer till he's feeling better. We will take him back the doctors if he doesn't improve in a couple of days.

Tummy ache with tonsillitis is very common. My DS gets sick with one antibiotic so if the sickness continues ask the GP and they can swap it. Whenever I used to have tonsillitis it also used to hurt in my ears so swallowing hurt for more than one reason. Making a banana and milk smoothie might give your DS a bit of a boost. Hope he feels better soon.
