New to Neocate - distressed 4 month old when pooping

Hi,

My 4 month old just started on Neocate on Friday because she has a cows milk protein allergy. She was originally on soya. Since Friday her poos have changed dramatically from quite firm, because the soya is quite a thick formula, to extremely runny and very dark green. Its not so much the consistence that is worrying me but the distress she gets in when she is having a poo. I'm wondering if she has tummy pains because her body is readjusting to this new formula.

Has anyone else experienced this? and does it subside? I feel so sorry for her and wish I could help her.

Thanks

Hi kdoug, my DS was on Neocate many moons ago. Yes, the runny dark green is normal for Neocate as you say. I can't remember DS being distressed when pooing, although his dietician did say something about neocate having very high osmolarity (me neither) which can exacerbate things like reflux.

Did you phase it in? Whenever we changed over formulas, we always changed slowly from one to the other (on dietician's advice). Ie 5 parts old formula, one part new, then 4 to 2 parts, etc etc, over about a week.

The only gripy reaction I remember DS getting was to the SMA high energy one I think.

But his reflux was dreadful on Neocate advance (for one year olds plus), so bad we had to go back to baby Neocate.

Sorry, this is a bit of a ramble. I hope it's just a change-over thing for your DD, and that she's more comfortable soon. I'd go back to your DD's doctor or dietician though, and report, just to be safe.

Thank you LatinForTelly. Really appreciate your reply.

We didn't phase it in because we phased in Nutramigen last time round and its caused her terrible tummy problems and wind to the point where she screamed and screamed and screamed. Apparently the soya and nutramigen were digesting at different rates in her tummy, so creating lots of wind and causing her pain.

I'm going to update our paediatrician this morning just to see what he says.

Sorry, I wasn't very useful really. That's interesting, there was another poster on here ages ago (in fact I think it was my first ever reply on mumsnet - under a different name) whose child's doctor/dietician had said not to mix formulas. Ours always told us to phase in / phase out.

I do hope you get it sorted anyway, and your poor DD is more comfortable soon. So stressful when they are so little.
