Can you miss chicken pox?

My youngest, 1, has it at the moment and it's horrid - blisters everywhere from inside his nose to the soles of his feet; I feel so sorry for him. However, my three year old, who shares a bedroom with him and is with him all the time, is absolutely fine. I am baffled - he's never had it to my knowledge and surely you couldn't just miss the pox... Could you?

How long has the little one had it?

When I was little my mum got chicken pox (very nasty when you are grown up) a week later I got it and a week after that my brother got it!

According to my mum, my sister and brother both had it twice. I've never once had it even though I shared a room with my sister. Maybe some people are naturally immune?

ShadowStar · 11/10/2014 18:12

My sister and I came down with chicken pox within a week or two of each other as children.

My brother did not catch it, despite my mum forcing us to play with him as much as possible.

He eventually caught it as an adult, about 30 years later.

DS had it an had about 25 spots. 2 weeks later (almost to the day!) DD got it. And she was covered.

So you may well find your other DC gets it in a few weeks

I managed to avoid it until I was 15 (despite my sister getting it and me sharing a room with her)

And dh avoided getting it from his brother and didn't get it until his 40s, when our dds had it.

NotCitrus · 11/10/2014 18:39

Ds got it the fifth time it went round nursery. I was sent to chicken pox parties as a child and often around it, but didn't get it until I was 16, when it went round my boarding school because most of the Asian students hadn't encountered it before.

Takes up to 3 weeks to incubate. So I got it in the middle of the holidays.

CustardLover · 11/10/2014 19:38

In that case I guess it's incubating and I'm in for another few weeks of blistery fun. Joy. Thanks all.

ds got it 14 days after dd. The incubation period is 10-21 days

I had my immunity to it tested when pregnant as I was worried about the fact that I'd never had it and DD1 was in school - and it turned out I had immunity even though I've apparently never had it (despite sharing a room with my sister when she had it) - so either I am naturally immune or I did in fact have it as a child but it was missed. Some people get very few spots.
