7 year old daughter constipated

Evening all. My poor 7 year old is constipated. The GP has prescribed Movicol and I opted for the chocolate flavour as thought dd would like it. She is refusing to take it and I am not sure what to do.
Does anyone know what the other flavours are? DD actually only drinks water (her choice) so really struggling.

What else could I give her?? She is having cereal (high fibre), baked beans with most meals, eats lots of fruit and is having dried apricots and raisins.

I am worried sick for her.
Thanks

Movicol does come in a plain version. I give it to my DD masked with squash. You can taste it (it's kind of salty) but I give it to her first thing in the morning when she's thirsty and she drinks it.

At 7 she's of an age to be bribed, really. She must be feeling wretched with the constipation and Movicol will help - it's the best medication out there (in my sadly extensive experience!). Just say if she drinks it quickly she can have a chocolate button or whatever to take the taste away. Or use a straw?

I'd also ditch the high fibre cereal if I were you. Unless you're drinking masses of water, bran sets in the gut like concrete and makes things worse.

Thanks for responding. Will get the GP to do a prescription for the plain one then, and try and get strawberry cordial (if such a think exists).

Interesting about the cereal - its just shreddies - do you think that is no good then? What would be better?

Have tried bribery - kinder eggs are her thing, but even that failed.

Such a nightmare for her. She is in good spirits but I really feel for her.

To be honest, once constipation gets to a certain point, any sort of food based remedy isn't going to help much. Lots and lots of liquids would be better. And, if she has a hard painful stool blocking the exit as it were, a glycerine suppository works wonders.

Workitbabe · 04/10/2014 22:30

Where would I get a glycerine suppository from?

Thanks again.

the chemist sell them.

Also get her to eat dried apricots etc.. once she is back to normal. They are high in fibre and not too laborious to eat with a kinder egg

Syrup of figs might work. It's just very sweet medicine, and gone much quicker than a drink so easier to get down a full dose.

You can get it in Boots, or any chemist really.

Lots of fluid, fruit and veg better. Agree with avoiding the high fibre. You will have to bribe her to have the movicol. Drinking movicol is going to be a lot nicer than having a glycerine suppository put in. My ds aged 3 has chronic constipation due to hirschsprungs disease. Kiwis, mango and strawberries all seem to work well. We mix plain movicol into squash and bribe him to drink it.

My 7yo is also on Movicol. He takes the plain version mixed into white grape juice, else another very sweet juice.

I wow uld recommend cutting out wheat fibre (it can be irritating to the bowel) and upping oat fibre. Also getting a lot of fluids into her.

figgieroll · 05/10/2014 08:15

Try 12 or 10 dried apricots a day and prune juice. Lots of water or or fruit juice.

I found grains always bunged me up - so bran flakes, wheatabix would be horrid for me. Oats were ok though

My DS was a water only drinker but will now drink vimto on a morning (laced with plain movicol).

Thanks so much for the responses. Will need to look at other breakfast options then as she loves Shreddies! Luckily she loves Strawberries and has quite a lot of those.

Thanks mn'ers. Raally helpful advice.
