Growing pains - does quinine help?

my DS (8) is complaining of very sore legs. Seems mainly to be hip joint & thigh muscle. Was in tears this morning asking not to go to school. Saw him stagger & fall. He is a very active sporty boy, not prone to tears or aches & pains, not aware that he has done anything out of ordinary that would cause pain. Have given him some ibuprofen and got him to do some stretching with me and taken him to school. Teacher said it was probably growing pains and suggested getting him to drink tonic water as the quinine would help. Managed to refrain from saying I didn't know you could drink tonic on its own. But does anyone else do this? Will it work? any other tips?

Quinine works if you have a set of specific autoimmune conditions causing your leg pain, you would then be prescribed hydroxychloroquinine.
