Why is DS (5) weeing all the time?

He's been dry since 2.5, always been able to hold it really well. Now he's desperate every half an hour or so, to the point where he's wetting himself if he can't get there in time. He has no tummyache, he's not poorly,he says it doesn't hurt when the wee comes out. And weirdly he's fine at night. I'm going to take him to the GP but has anyone experienced similar? Could it be psychological? He's finding the jump to Year 1 very tiring and he's an August baby so young in the year. He's loving it though and doesn't seem stressed. I'm so confused!

I would still suspect a UTI even though he's not in pain. I know it's less common in boys, but you'd have to rule it out.

That's my feeling too. I'm going to ask his teacher if he does it at school - he says not Confused

My 3 year old DN had this last week, doctor didn't seem to think that it was a UTI but was the stress of going back to Pre School after the holidays (although she enjoys it) and having her room redecorated! Her DM still suspected an infection though as it was quite dark and strong smelling.

Is he weeing a lot every time? Ie does he actually need to go every half hour, or just feel like he needs to go?

If he is drinking loads, weeing loads, and is very tired, get him to the docs ASAP - it could be type 1 diabetes. This starts suddenly, can happen to anyone, and can be very serious within a day or so - don't hang about.

If he just thinks he needs to go a lot - UTI or maybe irritable bladder. Or someone at school has got him worried about wetting himself?

Yep full wees every time. He's knackered too. However he came down with a heavy cold yesterday so maybe it's linked to that? Apparently not doing it at school which is odd. Might keep him off tomorrow if no better and get him checked out. Really hope it isn't diabetes.

The other thing is that if I ever let him have orange squash/fruit shoot etc. (which I don't any more!) he reacts like this - one time after orange squash he had 7 wees in one hour. But I don't think he's had any of that stuff, though DH gave him a fruit shoot on Friday Angry and then had to take him for loads of wees while we were out. I always figured it was an aspartame thing - it seems to affect DD like that too - but this has been going on since before that. What else has aspartame in it?!? He didn't wee as much after school today though, and he's not any thirstier than normal that I can see.

Thanks for responses!

Oh and I don't think he's worried about wetting himself as such, though he tries to conceal it when he does. He leaves it till the last possible minute to go, pretends he doesn't need one when he's hopping about holding his bits. All very odd.

There is also a condition called diabetes insipdus which results in extreme thirst and frequent urination. 'Diabetes' is a bit of a misnomer though - it's not sugar/insulin related.

Regardless I would get him checked over.

My DS had a similar experience when he just started Year 1. Teacher was concerned that he was always running to the loo. I gave him cranberry juice to clear his systems in case he had UTI (even though he did not complain of any pain). He could also be nervous due to the new environment. Fortunately, after a week or 2, he was back to normal.

IHeartKingThistle · 24/09/2014 15:47

That's reassuring, thank you! He doesn't seem to be weeing as much in the last couple of days, though when he decides to go he is absolutely desperate!
