Chicken pox advice please

My DS (19 months) has chicken pox. He came down with it on Sunday and although spotty has been totally well with it, no temperature, loss of appetite etc. Last night he refused his tea and was very upset and had a temp of 37.7. Gave him paracetamol and he went straight to sleep at bedtime. He's just woken now and has a temp of 38.7. I'm just a bit confused why he has suddenly developed a fever 5 days into the virus? Anyone had this with their DCs?

Dd has yet to have chicken pox, maybe call NHS direct.

It can take a while for CP to develop fully. Ds had 5 spots for 5 days and nothing else. He was 3.8. We weren't even sure if he had it. Fifth day, he woke up covered from head to toe in spots with a temp of 39 and was then really quite poorly for 4 more days.

With dd, at 9 months, she was very spotty with a high fever straight away, no ramping up.

Could just be normal progreSion of the virus, his immune system could just be giving it a final push or if any spots look very red or pus filled it could be an infection

My dd1 was very poorly on days 4-5 of the virus: aches, pain, high temp and chickenpox blisters in places I'd never imagined they could develop (I.e. her labia and clitoris). She was sleepy but would wake because of pain and itching Sad

Dd2 was 20mo when she had it and because she was in nappies, 2 spots on her bottom became infected. A trip to see the GP and a prescription for Fucidin cleared that right up.

If you are in any way worried, please do call NHS 111 for advice.

My 3 dds all had it in July. I found day 4-6 were the worst. Dd1 was hallucinating on night 4 but the next day seemed to turn a corner and improve. Dd2 had it the worst and was very poorly. She was at her itchiest and feverish around day 5.

Hopefully your ds will be on the mend in the next day or so. We found eurax cream to be a godsend and it's available in most chemists and supermarkets. About £4 for a big tube. Also gave piriton from chemist though they might need to be 2 for that I'm not sure. Bicarbonate of soda in a warm bath helps too.

Also, a temperature is the body over-heating to make it an inhospitable environment for a virus. It's your son's immune system fighting the virus

Molotov · 19/09/2014 09:35

Treatment-wise, we used infant paracetamol and ibuprofen; piriton syrup; calamine lotion; calamine cream and bicarbonate of soda in the bath (although neither felt like a bath).

Thanks everyone. He's brighter this morning but spots have doubled in quantity and size I reckon. Reassuring to hear days 4-6 have been the worst for some of your DC. DD (4) had it 2 weeks ago but was very ill from start to finish.
I have several tubes of fucidin so will put a bit on any of the spots if they start to look infected. Though if it was bacterial infection rather than just virus causing fever he wouldn't improve I guess?

bangers, my dd's infected spots were a secondary bacterial infection. The virus caused the spots; bacteria from urine and faeces contaminated the spots.

Fucidin won't work on viral spots. It will work on those infected with bacteria. Hope that makes sense Smile

bangersmashandbeans · 19/09/2014 11:37

Sorry that's what I meant - will only put it on spots that get infected (if any)
