4mth Baby not feeding

Proudmummy2014 · 15/09/2014 22:07

Hi,

Becoming Abit of a serial poster on here now :-) My 4mo baby used to drink 30oz a day however over the past month has reduced to 17oz- even that is a massive battle to get the milk down her. She takes a few gulps and then just screams and moves her head away. However there is just no way she can be full on 3/4oz. Also I feed her every 3.5/4 hours so she surely must be more hungry.

To top it off she has become extremely fussy the last few days and fighting her naps. I could always put her wide awake in her cot and she would fall asleep by herself (no crying) however now she screams the house down.

Can anyone please offer their thoughts on what you think is going on here? I am so confused and was in floods of tears earlier today.

Proud why do you want to introduce the baby rice? Personally I would wait until you've seen the Paediatrician and a Paediatric Dietician before I started to offer any solids.

Of course you can give baby rice if you want to, but I can see little point.

Going to to GP and getting a referral really is your best bet Smile

Proudmummy2014 · 16/09/2014 19:00

Do you think they will take this seriously and refer me? So far the HV and nurse really have dismissed this

Allergy uk have a helpline, which is open tomorrow from 9am to 5pm. I think its worth giving them a call and talking through what the nurse said.

I know you are confused over her advice, but it really is utter tosh. You need a referral to a Paed, and quick. If she was mine I'd be taking her to the GP now, especially as you mention the gurgling tummy and the screaming.

Proudmummy2014 · 16/09/2014 19:24

I'm going to call the allergy helpline and the doctors again first thing in the morning. I don't know if DD senses I'm talking about her but she literally gulped down all her milk now at bedtime with little screaming. Still fusses after 3.5oz and drank te rest lieing down but wast as irritable as usual. Strange

These were Dds symptoms of cmpi- reluctance to feed - would squirm or throw her head back stop after a few mouth fulls.

No rash but mottled skin and very very dry skin.

Weight gain was ok but given she spent two days nil by mouth and was extremely poorly and not feeding so of course it was an improvement.

Constantly bunged up. Eyes always gunky.

Never slept on back was only comfy on tummy.

Miserable. Never smiled.

Grunting and straining as of constipated but wasn't.

Bloated. Really bloated.

Toxic nappies. By god you have never smelt anything like it. And they literally burned her bottom. Acidic grainy foamy and green and of course smelly.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/09/2014 19:38

Sounds like a good plan Proud Smile

How many floz has she had today?

Think I know the answer but did the nurse weigh and measure her and record it?

Coconutjoe · 16/09/2014 20:19

Ds1 weight gain was fine. Symptoms hard to spot as ebf. Was waking lots, v hard to get to sleep. Cried when laid down. Once I cut out dairy from my diet he was much better. Then I weaned him and he had loose stools after milk, but not every time as could tolerate small amounts so took a while to spot. Gp was excellent. Did a poo test and came back positive.

When ds2 wouldn't feed they did that test straight away but he was fine. Very easy test so definitely worth a try.

lisaloulou84 · 16/09/2014 20:29

My DS was exactly the same as this at 4 months and it turned out to be teething, he's exactly the same now with 6 teeth coming all at once at the top Confused I gave him baby neurofen (HV recommended instead of calpol) half an hr before feeds. I also started feeding him in his bouncy chair and e seemed to like this more than being held. He also really fought his naps, and I found a bit of teething gel when he was struggling and a dummy in and he'd go down so much easier.

Proudmummy2014 · 16/09/2014 20:44

@giles- wow I'm so glad it was diagnosed for your LO and you got the help that was needed. Poor baby :-( My DD symptoms are not all of those. I would say it's just the reluctance to feed. In addition her chest sounded wheezy but again the nurse checked this and said its clear. Her ears and throat were fine too.

@jilted- in total today she has had 28oz which is an improvement. However I must stress that 14oz of which was a battle where I had to lay her down and force bottle in we mouth

@lisa- did you give nitrogen everyday? This is what confuses me because she's crying anyway I can't decipher if it's teething or because she's in pain for a different reason. HV said give pain relief "when she's struggling" but she's struggling anyway so not sure what to do :-S

OP posts:
Proudmummy2014 · 16/09/2014 20:47

*nurofen. Not nitrogen . Lol

Sorry, had missed this post. Yes, they will refer you, if you insist and you might have to really insist. I'm on a CMPI facebook group and lots of posters with CMPI babies seem to had to have really really pushed for a referral and a diagnosis. If it is CMPI you do need to know though so that you know what you are dealing with when you start weaning.

Have you tried giving her a dose of ibruprofen and a teething gel, like Dentinox, yet?

Proudmummy2014 · 16/09/2014 21:59

I've used Iboprofen and it does settle her at night, although she does still wake at midnight and 3am- not sure if this is down to hunger or teething. I tend to give water at midnight and she settles then I give milk at 3am. I've been using the nelsons Teetha granules aswell as Anbesol Liquid. Been using those everyday- again not sure if this is right or whether I should only use them "when she needs them" but as I mentioned she is so irritable all day anyway I realy cannot tell anymore if it's hunger, pain or if it's comfort she needs

Thanks Smile she's a happy healthy three yr old now you'd never know.i hope you can get the help you needThanks

Proudmummy2014 · 17/09/2014 12:44

Realised today that my DD went down much easier when on a pillow. Not sure if this is because she's elevated and at an incline or Because she likes the feel of a soft pillow and reminds her of sleeping in or bed?! Just trying to gauge whether this could be a sign of silent reflux . On waiting list to see doc today

Have you got an appointment yet Proud?

Proudmummy2014 · 17/09/2014 16:05

No!!!! They said next appmnt is next week but I I want one this week then I have to keep callig at 8am everyday to see if they have anything. Annoying!!

OP posts:
lisaloulou84 · 17/09/2014 16:32

I do use neurofen every day at the moment, mostly at night with his last feed and again when he wakes and throughout the day I use the granular and gel, but I find the gel really helps when he's fighting his nap as it's quite an instant relief. Did you have a look at the teeth? Often you can see the outline of them just under the surface of the gums.

allisgood1 · 17/09/2014 17:05

Does she sleep on her front? This may help.

Also call GP and say you want phone appointment and it's regarding your 4mnyh old. You'll get an appointment v quick.

Proudmummy2014 · 17/09/2014 18:21

Nope she sleeps on her back. Not quite sure how to get her to sleep on her stomach- I tried once an she ended up lifting her head like she does at tummy time lol

OP posts:
JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/09/2014 09:08

Please don't put her on her front to sleep. There is clear evidence that it can increase the risk of SIDS.

Is there a reason you are giving her water at midnight? Does she go to sleep straight after?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/09/2014 09:09

And agree on the doctors, ring them again, tell them that's she's 4 months and isn't feeding and you need seeing today.

Proudmummy2014 · 18/09/2014 10:20

Giving water because she used to sleep straight through to 5am so clearly doest need milk at midnight. Also when I give her water she has about 2oz max and settles back to sleep. Seeig doctor today at 3

So glad you've got an appointment. You made need to insist on a referral, stay strong Smile

Thought you might this on normal infant sleep and this on the 4 month sleep regression.

Please don't take the information as criticism. It's not meant that way at all. It's just fact based information to help you make up your own mind Smile

JiltedJohnsJulie · 18/09/2014 10:47

And do you think filming her whilst she is screaming during a feed would help?

Here's another article on sleepSmile
