DS strange smelling urine

Ds is 10 months old. For the past two days or so I've noticed a strange smell from his urine. I've never smelt this before with him or the others.
He doesn't seem dehydrated, is eating fine and does not have a temperature.
It is almost like an acidic smell or a burnt smell. It's really quite strong and can smell it when just around him.
I haven't been able to get an appointment with his GP but was wondering if I should go to out of hours?

I also read somewhere that smelly urine could be related to teething.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Could be teething but it could also be your nappies. Have you changed them recently?

tortoisesarefab · 13/09/2014 07:26

The brand I mean

No, tortoise, the same as usual. ??

Has he eaten anything different / new recently? Some food (like asparagus, but I'm sure there are more!) can affect the smell of wee?

Does his breath smell different too? If it smells odd, like pear drops, you should go to out of hours & mention both things, as there is a remote possibility it could be diabetes ...the other symptoms (tireder than normal, thirtstier, thinner, toileting more) I would think are hard to spot in such a young child, so if you are worried, don't feel bad for getting him checked. I think it's extremely unlikely but if it's diabetes then wee & breath can smell odd as the body tries to flush excess sugar & ketones - not something to put off checking, especially in a little one.

I am sure it will be something far more 'mundane', possibly a uti? My little lad was prone to them & they are good to get fixed quick, so either way, worth a trip to the docs to put your mind at ease. Hopefully pp was right & it's something wonderfully straightforward like a change of food or nappies! Smile

When dd was cutting her first teeth, she had the smelliest vinegary poos ive ever had the "pleasure" of smelling. Utterly vile. Could it be a similar thing but with his urine - are there any little teeth trying to poke through?

Iggly · 13/09/2014 07:40

Urine infection? It does happen even if no other symptoms.

I was thing possibly uti piggy.
Hasn't really changed anything in his diet (everything and anything! No asparagus though??)
I haven't smelt his breath, but I will do plodding. That's an idea.
He may be teething think but he already has two teeth and didn't notice anything back then.
