Complained that it felt like her eye had a tiny (external) paper cut in the outside corner - this was Sunday. I couldn't see anything

Monday - awoke with painful swollen eye. Seen at GP surgery by nurse practitioner and prescribed an eye ointment. Btw this is not a stye or conjunctivitis. Infection was mentioned.

Tuesday no better and not responding to treatment. Dd says eye hurts 6/7 out of 10 every time she blinks. Saw doctor again - who prescribed an oral antibiotic.

This evening still no improvement - she was in tears at school over it. This evening she pulled her eyelids back so I could partially see inside and asked if the affected eye looked different to the healthy eye. Tbh it looked liked there was a cut inside the eyelid!

Plan to take her to A&E tomorrow in the hope that she will be seen by ophthalmologist. Reasonable?

Poor thing, sounds very painful and unpleasant for her.

I would suggest posting this in Chat, as quite a busy Topic.

Hope it improves soon.

hmc · 10/09/2014 21:41

Ok thanks LesleyKnopeFan

I'd take her to A&E. They have specialist equipment and will be able to take a proper look. Have you googled periorbital cellulitis? Does it look anything like that?

Stuffofawesome · 10/09/2014 21:42

If you are in london go to eye a&e at moorfields or western eye hospital

Caravanoflove · 10/09/2014 21:44

Do you have an eye casualty you can go to?

hmc · 10/09/2014 21:49

I've checked re Eye Casualty - to see an Ophthalmologist same day I have to either get GP referral to take with me or pitch up in A&E and hope the Casualty doctor refers me. Doctor referral only

LadySybil - I have googled that. She has no tracking and no fever so am hopeful it is not that. However she is in pain and it's not improving at all (not deteriorating either)

Seems like my plan to go to A&E is not overreacting then... Good, because I don't want to be neurotic mother

A good friend told me to always err on the side of caution with kids and go, even if it you get sent home, better to be safe than sorry. Plus I think you don't want to take any chances with eyes.

Good luck tomorrow and let us know how she gets on.

hmc · 10/09/2014 22:25

I agree with your good friend. Thanks Lesleyknope fan, I will.

She'd be very pleased, she likes it when people agree with her!

You're not neurotic at all, the fact that you're questioning whether you are

LesleyKnopeFan · 10/09/2014 22:29

Sorry, posted too soon.

The fact that you're worrying if you're being neurotic would normally indicate that you're not at all.

hmc · 11/09/2014 14:22

Hi, it was a chalazion - a fluid filled cyst which has become infected. Stronger antibiotics given and hot compresses and massage recommended. Further appointment on Monday since if it hasn't resolved they met do minor OP on it. Good to know it is nothing sinister though Smile

Glad you have a diagnosis and a plan of action. Fingers crossed it will go away with the antibiotics. Poor girl, she must be miserable, hardly comparable but I got some sawdust in my eye for a whole day as a 10 yr old and I have never forgotten it, it was so uncomfortable.

Thanks for updating.

LadySybilLikesCake · 11/09/2014 17:23

Oh, that's better than yesterday. Fingers crossed for them working, I hope she's on the mend quickly Smile

hmc · 11/09/2014 18:22

Awww thanks for your concern and interest Lesley and Lady

My daughter had one of those. It was pretty awful and you could see it from the outside. It took a good few months to clear up after medication.

Catsmamma · 11/09/2014 20:12

just incase of reoccurance, if you haven't an open return appointment, your friendly local optician can be good as an entry point to get a referral...their eye knowledge tends to surpass that of a GP and some can prescribe too. Well in scotland they can.

Glad she is on the mend.

hmc · 11/09/2014 20:16

Thanks for the tip Catsmamma

Hi hmc, how is it today, any better?

hmc · 12/09/2014 20:49

Thanks for asking LesleyKnopesFan - a little less red and swollen I think Smile
