How do you get a urine sample from a toddler?

My DD is 18mo and the doctor suspects she has a UTI. He has given me a sample bottle and wished me luck with the collection!

I have just bought a potty, which baby was fascinated by, she declared it is a hat and put it on her head, then refused to sit on it. So I have put her to bed and will try again in the morning.

Please advise me how to get that urine sample!

Aw, I hope she feels better very soon.
Well done.

Her temperature is now 40.4. Hope these antibiotics are fast acting.

poor dd, ds suffered from uti and collecting wee samples was always a challenge! we resorted to hanging out in the bathroom or kitchen (hard floor)with me hovering whilst i handed him drinks.
if temp v high perhaps try less clothing or bedding and cooling her room see here for more info.

She has no clothes nor bedding and we have given the max dose of paracetamol.

Considering a tepid bath next.

we always struggled to get ds temp down when he had an uti even with alternating calpol and nurofen, its usually how we knew what it was! his temp dropped down after a few doses of antibiotics.
hope she is soon feeling better?

Alternate paracetamol with nurofen as per red's post

Polyethyl · 16/08/2014 11:20

Can I give her ibuprofen on an empty stomach? Because she will not eat. And we have already given her as much paracetamol as I dare.

Will she take some milk?
That would be better than nothing, then give one dose of Ibuprofen (unlikely to do any harm as a one off). Hopefully she'll perk up a bit and maybe even eat a little if her fever comes down.
Poor mite. Poor you.
Thanks

Thank goodness I am still breastfeeding. She's clamped herself to my tit. So I will shove some ibuprofen into her. She's an aweful mottled colour not a rash, just off colour. If her temperature goes up so high again in this cycle of fever then I'm going back to A&E.

Mottled colour in limbs is common in high fevers: she may be burning hot, but her feet and hands may be ice cold. It's called 'centralising' and ensure that important stuff (internal organs, brain) get good blood supply.

Yes, BF as much as she will take it, v v good stuff. And do give the Ibuprofen.
Temperatures in children tend to rise as the day goes on, so consider giving another dose this afternoon/evening.

Thank you. Kind mumsnetters. I am grateful for the reassurance.

Yes, fine to give full dose of para and ibu even if she won't eat. Write down the time you give each so that you can give the next dose as soon as it's due, even if it means waking her up. Good luck!

Taking them outside is another good way of bringing temp down- which is why children are so much better once they get to the doctors! Also do chase the lab sample result- it's usually back in 24 hours

My DD had a uti a few months ago and was like this. We alternated maximum doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen for a couple of days but only antibiotics got her temperature down. She's allergic to amoxicillin so the doctor couldn't give her the usual antibiotic and we had to get an obscure one ordered in.
I'm sure your little one will improve soon but if she stays over 40 despite treatment, please think about going to a&e.
