Hand, foot and mouth

I suspect ds2 (2) has hand, foot and mouth. Will antihistamine give him any relief? Also, any other ideas that might settle him would be greatly appreciated.

Antihistamine doesn't really give relief from the itch / pain but can make children sleepy so can help with settling them at bedtime. Or yours could be like my DD who goes the other way with Piriton and bounces off the wall for several hours!

CarbeDiem · 03/08/2014 16:50

My ds found it very painful to eat/swallow so I bought some anti-septic/anaesthetic spray.
Piriton should help with an itch - it's brilliant for chicken pox so if he is itchy then there's no harm in trying.

Thanks, I'll go into the chemist tomorrow for some spray.
Might hold off an hour or so before the piriton, hopefully it will help him sleep.

Hopefully it won't do the same to him west..

You have my sympathies! My 15mo dd was tentatively diagnosed with this yesterday. We were prescribed Difflam spray, which apparently numbs the mouth. Have to say that getting it into her is something of a challenge! But when we do get it in, it does seem to work for a short time.

We're not finding calpol or nurofen very helpful at all. Think we just have to ride the mo-fo out :(

Do you know how long it's supposed to last for? I've never seen her so unhappy and in so much pain. Hope you're faring a little better Thanks

It's not going so well to be honest. He's really unhappy and unsettled. I've given in and have him snuggled in beside me (I know, rod for my own back etc.)
I think it's about a week, but that's just going by the nhs website.
You too have my sympathies. I feel like he's been attached to me all weekend. It's horrible when they're unwell

That's it - Difflam spray - Thanks Rally, I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of it.

I remember it lasting for around a week with days 2-4 being the worst.

readyforno2 · 04/08/2014 11:29

Turns out it was wrong.
On top of a virus causing a rash all over his bottom half he has impetigo.
Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions. Fingers crossed it passes quickly

We've also had a new diagnosis! Apparently it's a gum infection that's gone bacterial, so we have abs.

I told the doctor I thought it was HF&M - she said HF&M is a breeze compared to this!

Hope recovery comes quick for you - it's just miserable, isn't it?!
