When did you know right time to stop omeprazol?

Hi all
DD is 12 months and had reflux since birth. Weaning was quite an issue and has been refusing bottles since 5 months therefore they increased her dose of omeprazol.
Anyway, weaning is improving and she's down to 2 bottles a day which she takes not too bad if distracted. The GP put a note on last prescription saying they want to speak to us if we want more omeprazol so I'm thinking they want her off it.
Can anyone share their experience of when you knew it was right to stop it? Thanks!

We took DS off lansoparazole around 6 months. We tried it at 5 months and it didn't work. Then we started offering it every other day and he was fine, and then took him off at 6 months and was fine.

I think it suppressed his other allergies though.

It's common for GPs to review medication, it doesn't mean they want to stop it necessarily but review it to see if you need it and how you're getting on with it.

Do you feel she needs it still? My 2 year old is still on ranitidine. We tried weaning it by cutting down the amount of doses but it didn't work so we went back to it.

If you feel she still needs it and would be worse without it then tell your GP that. You could try cutting down the amount of omeprazole or the number of doses and see if that makes any difference but don't let the GP pressure you to stopping it if you don't want to. Plenty of kids are on omeprazole for years.

Thanks both. I was hoping I would be able to take her off it anyway, but I'm not too sure what symptoms of reflux I would be looking out for now she's older!
She's teething really badly at the mo so I would find it hard to tell what would be causing any potential discomfort if taking her off the omeprazol!

I'm not sure what symptoms your dd had but my DS does a lot of wet burps, coughs a lot, especially at night and occasionally has tiny vomits. So these all come back if off the ranitidine.

Might be best to wait until she's not teething before you change anything

My 16 month old is still on it and won't be coming off it anytime soon I don't think. His symptoms are much the same as they were when he was little. Very gulpy when lying down, cough, tilts his head back a lot and makes a funny gasping/squeaking sound. What were her symptoms before the omeprazole? If you miss a dose do you notice a difference?

Actually I'm thinking she might be ok without it.. She used to be sick a lot and squirm when sleeping. Screaming when being fed too.
She hasn't been sick in a while and now sleeps on her tummy which I think makes her sleep better.. I was just worried in case the heart burn messes her solids up a bit.. Suppose I can reduce it gradually and see how I get on. I'm not sure if there's a difference when I miss a dose as I'm not sure if it's teething or not!!!

We're currently trying to wean our 7yo off omeprazole. He's been on it since he was six months old.

At the highest dose, he was on 30mg per day. We've got him down to 10mg over the last couple of years and now we're doing every other day and just watching for symptoms.

Last time we tried to cut it down, I noticed more hiccuping, gulping and/or coughing in the night (he still has an overnight feed via gastrostomy), so we put it back up again.

If your DD is on 10mg, I would think you could try doing every other day and watching for symptoms, as I know it has a long active time (can't think of technical term.) I am NOT a health care professional though, and I'd definitely talk to your gp before doing anything.
