Hey everyone. Just wanted to share this with you all, and see what you might have to say. So my little girl is 13 months now, and loves any type of cheesy creamy food. Was so happy when I found Hipp baby carbonara in small shop, instead of having to travel miles to buy cheesy food. Anyway, bought the last jar on shelf last Wednesday, she loved it, went back to the shop and yippee, they had two more jars which I scooped up straight away. She ate it yesterday. And since then..... has had the most watery stools ever, every nappy is leaking, and lots of gas, poor girl in pain. I went to open the other jar today, wait for it..... it was out of date BEFORE she was even born..... expired March 2013, was produced Sept 2011!!! Then I considered back to last week (and found the jar at the bottom of the bin outside) and yes they all the same March 2013. I AM DUMBFOUNDED. I spoke with doctor who agrees her sickness is from this jar (and probably still from last week too). She will be fine, just takes time to let it pass through her system. I obviously went mad at the shop owner, who was horrified and very sorry, and has offered me 'something' but I don't know what yet as I haven't been back to shop today. Thinking back, I bought the last jar last week, so they restocked the shelves with the same VERY out of date product. Not forgetting too that it contains egg, cream, cheese and ham. What do you all think?

Indeed. OP's DD subsequently having an upset fluke was probably a fluke of nature. No logical reason to connect the two Hmm

theendoftheendoftheend · 30/07/2014 23:19

*stomach

EugenesAxe · 30/07/2014 23:21

Thank you, theendoftheend for injecting a bit of sanity into this thread. I also found many of the comments about shop bought food quite sneery and seriously - every cupboard item you check the date of? I certainly don't unless there's some other indicator, such as it looking well dodgy. I consider it a duty of care on the part of the shop keeper to not sell out of date food.

Shallishanti · 30/07/2014 23:22

but when she ate the same date jar last week she wasn't ill

giraffescantboogie · 30/07/2014 23:26

was it a best before or a use by?

morethanpotatoprints · 30/07/2014 23:28

I am also thinking that I'm glad I made all my own food.

theendoftheendoftheend · 30/07/2014 23:35

It is the duty of care of the shop, hence the laws governing it! Thankyou EugenesAxe I was starting to feel like a bit of a nomad Confused
I also think if anyone on here complained about buying 'fresh' fish that was actually out of date and caused illness people would be more sympathetic. It's baby jar snobbery at it's worse. It doesn't matter what it is that you're purchasing, if its food it should be consumable.

rockybalboa · 30/07/2014 23:47

As much as I would be annoyed that a shop had sold me out of date baby food, I simply can't get past your unnecessarily DM style thread title. No, I'm not SHOCKED and I resent being told that I should be.

DiaDuit · 30/07/2014 23:55

I'm thinking i'm not shocked. Despite the dramatic embellishment.

Check the dates on jars or make her normal food. Like what you eat.

morethanpotatoprints · 31/07/2014 00:02

theendofthe....

I totally agree with you except the baby jar snobbery bit.
It has nothing to do with snobbery, when you are aware of what goes into a jar of baby food or any other ready made food stuff that contains egg you steer clear.
I'm sure its the same for other types of food too such as soup, definitely meat spreads.
I'm not suggesting they aren't safe as the egg is pasturised and passes tests. However, on seeing the product at the start of its journey to your baby food jars I vomited.
This was not good enough for my babies or children.
They are older and mostly grown ups now and consume all sorts of shit.

MostWicked · 31/07/2014 00:04

No, not shocked. The shop shouldn't stock foods past their dates, but mistakes do happen.

For a jar, the date would be a Best Before, not a Use By, so it hadn't expired as such, just gone past its best. As long as it was still sealed, it's unlikely that it would cause any ill effects

I used jars at times, I wouldn't judge anyone for that.

theendoftheendoftheend · 31/07/2014 00:06

Dramatic embellishment? Don't be coy DiaDuit if somethings been embellished point it out! Don't just allude, it confuses things if people are trying to 'guess the snide remark', just say what you think.

brdgrl · 31/07/2014 00:06

poor you and DD. I'm glad she's going to be ok.

DiaDuit · 31/07/2014 00:09
Hmm

I said what i meant thread police officer theend

theendoftheendoftheend · 31/07/2014 00:13

morethan, thankyou I appreciate that. The thing with baby jars, as with all other processed foods, is you do your best to avoid it right up until you need to serve something quick and easy that will go down well (beans on toast in my household!) but hey it happens, none of us (perhaps?) are infallible. It should still be safe to eat and that was really the point of the OP, not an opportunity to have a pop at OP for feeding her DD baby jars, because its not an unreasonable thing to do (OP never said it was her sole diet) but selling baby food a year out of date is very unreasonable indeed.

theendoftheendoftheend · 31/07/2014 00:19

PC theend if you don't mind Hmm
I still don't know what dramatic embellishments you are referring to.

Hakluyt · 31/07/2014 00:24

Not shocked. However, I would be very cross that the shop made a mistake.

Another one wondering why you need to go miles to buy cheese.

DiaDuit · 31/07/2014 00:25

I was talking about OP's overdramatic "wait for it" and "dumbfounded" as if it's a daily mail story.
