Checking on DS last night before bed, gave him a kiss and put my hand on his chest, noticed his heart was thumping.

Kept my hand on his chest for a few minutes and his heartbeat was very irregular (I'll try and type it out!)

It was going boomboomboom..........boom........boom boom.......boomboomboomboomboom..............................boom.............boom

Not in any kind of pattern but just very irregular.

Came back and checked 5 mins later and it was still the same Hmm

Listened again this afternoon and it's still the same!

DS is totally healthy, running around like a mad thing....does everyone have regular heartbeats? He has had his chest listened to before (chest infection) so wouldn't am irregular heartbeat be picked up then?

No, best get checked out. May be nothing but better not to take a risk.

Children often have an irregular rhythm, called sinus arrhythmia. The heart rate varies with breathing in and out. However, get it checked out if you're worried.

It's quite normal for children's heart rates to vary noticeably with breathing, heart rate speeds up a bit when breathing in and slows down again when breathing out, it's called sinus arrhythmia and is nothing to worry about. This may well be what you noticed last night and the fact that he is healthy and active is reassuring.
On the other hand, there are many rare and unusual causes of funny heart beats that may need some treatment.
Going to your gp, saying you've noticed your son's heartbeat was irregular and asking for him to be checked out would be a sensible thing to do, they can arrange an ECG (stickers on the chest attached to a machine which analyses the heart rhythm, not painful or scary at all for your son) which will rule out any worrying abnormalities in rhythm.
