Does hayfever really cause these symptoms?

I posted yesterday about my DS but in the wrong topic section, fingers crossed someone might have some advice!

My DS has been coughing and wheezing for 6 weeks following a cold. Went to GP 2 weeks ago who said it was a virus.

Yesterday he had a bad wheezing attack which lasted about 10 mins, he wasn't distressed and had a big cough and it stopped. I was quite scared so took him to the GP who said it is probably hayfever?

Has anyone had any experience of this? I was thinking it must be asthma but the GP said he looked too well for asthma to be a possibility.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I don't know, but my dd had an ongoing cough following a cold and wheezy when she was 3. In the end the doctor decided it was asthma, gave her an inhaler with a spacer and we also got a humidifier for her room at night. Her cough cleared up within a week. For a few years when she got a cold she needed the inhaler a couple of times, but since being 5 we haven't needed it anymore.

Yes hayfever can cause many symptoms - watery eyes, scratchy throat, runny nose, wheeziness, coughing and itchy ears.

Try some antihistamine such as cetirizine (Piriteze) or Piriton.

If it doesn't help see the GP again. It could be asthma.

I developed hayfever and asthma together about aged 10, both pretty much under the allergic rhinitis umbrella I think. I had a ventolin inhaler for if the wheezing got bad, and antihistimines to stop my face inflating like a football. I grew out of the asthma, but not the hayfever, unfortunately.

My GP was saying he's had a lot of people with hayfever-related coughs this summer, and the creche staff said the same about the kids - the hayfever sufferers are all coughing this year.

I have hayfever myself and I've had an awful cough for the last few weeks which the doc reckons is allergy related (though I do have asthma too).

The 'looks too well to have asthma' thing is silly though. My asthma doesn't make me look ill! It's very mild though.

Hmm at "looks too well to have asthma"
Dd has been.told this twice before by doctors during separate serious asthma attacks before:
-an ambulance being called as soon as the GP had checked her oxigen levels
-Being admitted to.children's ward as soon as triage HCP listened to her chest.
I think your GP should be able to decide what's going on and prescribe some useful.treatment Angry

Definitely allergic/asthma related I'd say.

Dd (at 8.5 months) was on piriton for 1+ year olds.

Someonestopthatmonkey · 03/07/2014 14:55

Thanks for your replies, I thought the 'looks to well to have asthma' was pretty stupid too!

Have been giving him piriton since last night, no improvement yet but I'll wait and see. Hopefully it's hayfever but I'm not convinced ( he has allergies and eczema too) so I think with his symptoms it's something more.

I'm just scared if it is asthma and he has an attack I won't have any treatment for him or know what to do. Ill definitely push the issue with the GP.

Look for nostrils flaring

and sucking in of the chest, throat or neck

Ring the ambulance straight away as an asthma attack can get serious, very quickly

mousmous · 05/07/2014 23:21

yes, sounds like allergic asthma.
your dc needs a reliever inhaler (salbutamol) for such attacks and probably a preventer inhaler during hayfever season.

best take him to be seen, asthma is often silent (no wheezing and coughing only after running about/at night/when lying down). I nearly missed dc's firs asthma attack as they withdrew and just sat down quietly in a corner.

and it's bloody awful, my parent's didn't treat my asthma (long story) and it's left me with lung damage.
