Bronchitis or allergies?

DS is 8 weeks old. He's had a blocked nose, snuffly breathing and coughs/has difficulty breathing after lying down for a long time (eg at night) for over 3 weeks. No temperature. Very dry skin since birth.

We've been to a Dr 3 times now. We've given him nose sprays and even some meds against bronchitis but he's not getting any better.

The Dr has twice mentionned it might be allergies (DH and I are both allergic to pollen and cats) but she isnt sure. She doesnt seem to think its a big deal because although he sometimes struggles feeding ( and gets distressed cos he cant breathe) hes putting on weight extremely well.

Can babies this young have allergies to pollen/dust mites etc? Should he be coughing more if its bronchitis?

Hmm. Bronchitis or bronchoilitis? If it is allergies what does the doctor recommend? I'd ask for tests to ensure its allergies, particularly if it's affecting his breathing. What milk is baby drinking? Milk allergies are common enough in young babies, perhaps that could be it?keep pressing the doctor until you get it sorted

Maybe bronchiolitis (am not in the uk - I may gave translated it wrongly!). Dr does say its not the season for it, hence possible allergies.

He is ebf. Rarely sick so dont think its a milk allergy tjo I could be wrong of course.

Can you test for pollen allergies? Or just food ones?

Ah ok, it's not the season for it, you're right. Hmm unlikely it's cmp allergy if he is end, DS2 had it and I cut out dairy which worked but it also was evident in his skin (excema) and nappies ( more explosive than the usual ebf ) .

You can get a skin test or blood test for pollen allergy, had to take a child form work to docs for one. Is his temp going down with paracetamol?

Shahsham · 03/07/2014 09:36

Yes temp has gone down but he s still miserable poor thing. Got a physio person coming to clear his breathing which I know will help him breathe but Im dreading cos I know he ll cry loads.

Dr also asked if we have excema in the family which we dont. I didnt think his dry skin was a concern really. He peeled loads after the birth, then got awful baby acne which has turned into cradle cap on his head and dry skin on his chest.

Dr 2 had v dry skin after birth but I assumed it was because he was overdue? I used oilatum on it. How the physio goes well ??

Thanks and thanks for chatting!

Physio was ok (well, a bit traumatic for me - he claims it doesnt hurt the babies) and the guy said it definitely isnt bronchitis. He gave me a few tips and said to go back to dr in a week if its not better.

Temp was back up 6 hours after paracetemol so Ive given some more
