Worried about DD's dry skin and how to treat.

My 4mo DD has patches of very dry, sandpaper skin all over but particularly on her thighs, face and scalp. Her back is entirely clear. I am worried that this is more than just ordinary dry skin as My sister suffers from psoriasis and has done since she was a teenager. DDs skin isn't red though and I'd like to try moisturising first incase I am overreacting. Can I use diprobase type cream on baby skin? I have really robust skin myself and use highly scented soap and glory body butters so don't really know much about sensitive skin!

I would use olive oil. It's very nourishing and completely natural....my children don't have dry skin but I do...and it's sensitive too...I know that Diprobase can cause reactions such as redness, sensitivity, dry skin, dermatitis and soreness....so I wouldn't use it on a 4 month old. Also look at the washing powder or liquid you're using...is it a gentle one?

Try double base - sure that'd fine and works wonders. Make sure you only using gentle non bio washing stuff. Avoid baby bath e.g johnsons as very drying. Use e45 bath instead

Good point Airplane....I agree that baby bath etc can be very drying and some babies are way more sensitive to that.

I use nonbio but also Johnstones shampoo. DD has a LOT of hair. If I use olive oil won't she smell like cooking? And what should I use on hair/ body in bath?

Oh, I see you said e45 bath. Will get that today. Can I use e45 cream?

My DD doesn't smell of cooking! Grin If you don't want to risk that then do use the E45 bath on her skin..it's an emollient cream and is moisturizing and cleansing at the same time whilst being very pure.... and I think the cream would be fine to add after her bath...but as for hair washing, at 4 months she doesn't need shampoo...warm water is enough.

airplanesandsun · 02/07/2014 10:26

E45 is fine on skin - we coat DD at night, although she is older. Just use the tiniest bit of gentle shampoo if needed. Double base is just a think cream that a pharmasist recommended to me. Cured dry skin patches.

Sorry Winnibago, just kidding! Will use olive oil today until I can get e45. What about coco butter? I have a bottom butter one I have never used (gift) but looking at it it has starch in so I would guess this is a no no. I have ordinary palmers coco butter with vitimin e for myself though...

My doctor recommended almond oil rather than olive for sensitive skin (less likely to irritate very sensitive skin).

My DD has excema and I really rate Eucerin Ato control bath oil and body moisturiser. Gentle enough to use on baby skin and very moisturiing. I use burts bee shampoo and her scalp is the one bit of her skin that is in perfect condition.
