Toddler Diarrhoea - could it actually be constipation??

Evenin'! I've posted about my son's poo before, and between us and the docs we'd come to the conclusion that he has Toddler Diarrhoea - hardly ever firm, has no idea when he's pooing etc. No hope of toilet training him while this is the case, altho he can control his wees.
He's three and a bit.

The last couple of weeks he's had particularly awful watery poos, very flecky with partially digested stuff etc., the smell has been horrendous, they've made his bum a bit sore, and yet he still denies he's pooed if asked. Hmm
His normal poo is peanut butter texture at best, often runnier.

Anyhoo - I'm starting to wonder if he's actually constipated, and this stuff is what's getting past a blockage? This week he's passed a couple of really hard small lumps in otherwise runny/watery pooey nappies, and I can't see how else that would occur?

If this is the case, how do we deal with it, ie clear the blockage?
Any advice or experience welcomed! Thanks

It could be overflow from constipation but I would get it checked out. If you treat constipation but it is diarrhoea you could cause a bigger problem.

We were told it was toddler diarrhoea for years when it was overflow. DS then lost all sensation in his bowels as it was not treated. I have never met a doctor who could feel an impaction. Ours was only found by x-ray.

Sorry can't help with your question, but have they investigated what the underlying cause is?

Thank you all for replying! Thanks

Shine He's had the standard wheat/dairy allergy tests and stool sample tested too, all clear. Our GP said he may either have some food sensitivities that we'll figure out over time, or it may be unexplained gut immaturity.
He was slightly prem, and very refluxy, so that may be linked too.

His stomach doesn't seem to bother him, he never complains of pain (unless he's sore from a bad acidy nappy).

Having just had DC2 I feel like I've seen the doc loads lately, I think I'd get the brush off if I asked for a scan! Looks like I need to book him another appt tho....
