HELP - Hand foot and mouth. Dd complaining joints hurt

Dd3 has been poorly for the last 9 days. On Monday I took her to the Dr and he said it was hfmd. She had lots of blisters on her lips, mouth and tongue and some spots on her hands and buttocks. She has been quite poorly with it and I've kept her home from nursery all week.

Anyway she seemed to be improving but I noticed yesterday and today she is struggling to walk. She is walking really awkwardly and complaining that it hurts and is looking to get carried a lot. Has anyone else experienced this as a side effect to hand, foot and mouth?

I do remember when my ds2 had this he sore feet and blisters in them. He couldn't wear his hoes for a few days and didn't really want to walk. Horrid illness.

Thanks for replying tired. Agree it's an awful illness and the gp said it was a mild virus. It really isn't! She hasn't had any spots at all on her feet and it's almost as if it's her hips that are bothering her. Hard to explain but she's walking with her legs wide apart and really looks like she's struggling. DH thinks I'm worrying too much but she just doesn't seem right. Think I might phone the on call Dr in the morning and see what they say. Dr had said she should be fine in a few days Sad

I'd ring out of hours and see what they say I think.

Thanks hopeful. So hard when she's still so wee and can only tell me it hurts. She can't really explain what hurts. Just that it hurts to walk or climb the stairs. When I ask her to point at the sore bit she just starts pointing at her numerous bruises Grin She's trying to learn to ride a bike so she has quite a few

I don't think GP's regards HFM as nasty, but in our experience, it was. DD was 3 when she had it And her blisters were deep underneath her finger tips and toes, sore mouth and awful joint aches.

She was in quite a bad way for a week and I remember being concerned about the amount if calpol/neurofen I was dosing her with.

Your poor little mite - hope she has a speedy recovery.

JammyGeorge · 22/06/2014 22:05

I caught HFM off ds1 last year I was dreadfully sick. First few days very bad flu like symptoms with aching joints and neck.

But in the following days when the blisters came out I kid you not my hands and feet were burning! I couldn't put my shoes on or walk it was awful.

Perhaps her blisters are burning or tender as well and it's making walking uncomfortable? I'd imagine at 3 she'll have no idea how describe that sort of sensation?

Either way I hope she's on the mend soon and defo get her back to the docs if you are worried, it was a bloody awful illness.

How is your dd now?

arewethereyetmum78 · 23/06/2014 16:19

Thanks everyone. Ended up taking dd to ooh yesterday as she literally couldn't walk and was totally lethargic. Dr was great and very thorough with her. He said it's very common for there to be painful hips after hfm and that it would likely pass in a day or two. She seemed much better this morning and could bear her weight on her legs better. However she has pretty much slept all day. Felt awful waking her at 230 for the school run. Reckon she's just sleeping off whatever is left of the virus. Poor wee mite, it's really taken it out of her. Think we're by the worst now though

DS had a run of viruses earlier this year, including 2 mild doses of HFM. He had a fever and a limp so gp referred him to a&e where they told me that viral infections can stay in the joints and cause inflammation and less commonly, infection in the joint itself. We were told if the limp/temp didn't clear in a few days he would need to be reassessed, just in case. Hope your LO is fully well again soon.

Oh and just one other thing about hfm, it can cause them to lose their nails, fingers and toes. Didn't happen Dd, but DS lost all of his.

arewethereyetmum78 · 23/06/2014 17:09

fruit thanks for the warning about the nails. That would have freaked me out! Just inspected dds fingers and she's got wee blisters just above the cuticle on some of them so might be likely she does lose some nails. Goodness she'll hate that Sad

It was the wonder of MN that warned me too! DS lost his quite a while afterwards, but I think it was as the virus was finally leaving his system. His nails got really thick and blistered from the cuticle. other than them getting caught in sleeves/socks, they didn't seem to bother him.
