he's being weeing loads, started weeing himself wetting bed and losing weight. No urine infection so doc (we went to see registrar doc who was brill) is sending him for bloodtest. Under 8s bloodtest is at appointment at city hospital so appointment not till 11 July. Feeling really anxious???

Hi 11th July too long to wait.my ds now 11 was diagnoised at go when 8 very quickly then we went immediately to hospital. Doc can do urine test there and then to check if glucose present and ketones and also a quick blood glucose test at surgery ..with a finger pricier and meter. I would go back and if your ds shows any signs getting worse or unwell take him to a&e.do hope he is okx

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 21/06/2014 13:13

If it is diabetes, you'll probably be in A&E by next week, let alone 11th July. Go back to GP (emergency appt) and ask them to do a urine test in the surgery.

Or go to a pharmacist with a urine sample in a very clean bottle. I think they can do the test - if not they can definitely sell you urine testing strips.

I don't want to scare you, but this is an emergency. Children die from late-diagnosed diabetes. And they die quickly. It's just as dangerous as meningitis.

WipsGlitter · 21/06/2014 13:15

A friends daughter was very unwell with diabetes. I'd get a second opinion ASAP.

stillstandingatthebusstop · 21/06/2014 13:32

The Diabetes UK website has a good section about symptoms that you can look at.

I don't know why Drs delay like this - my Ds2 could have been diagnosed on the Monday (with a finger prick test at the Drs) but they stalled us. He was very very unwell by the Wednesday - cue emergency trip to Drs and rush to the hospital. He had to stay in for longer than he would have if he had been diagnosed earlier.

Follow your gut instinct and take your child elsewhere (A&E out of hours Drs) to get it checked out if you need to.

My ds2 is 16 now and manages his diabetes pretty well.

"1.1.1.2 Children and young people with suspected type 1 diabetes should be offered immediate (same day) referral to a multidisciplinary paediatric diabetes care team that has the competencies needed to confirm diagnosis and to provide immediate care." NICE guidance

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 21/06/2014 13:40

Did they not dip his urine for glucose and do a finger prick for blood sugar at the surgery?

If the GP suspects diabetes. you need to be seen straight away.

Kundry · 21/06/2014 14:02

Hi I posted on your other thread.

If the concern is diabetes he MUST be tested today, not on July 11th. It cannot wait that long, in fact it can't wait til Monday.

It can be easily ruled out with a urine or finger prick test but if he does have diabetes he needs to start treatment immediately.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/06/2014 14:08

Agree he must be tested today. We were seen at our local out of hours community hospital service on a Sunday to check DS out for Diabetes. This was accessed by ringing the emergency doctor number.

paddyclampo · 21/06/2014 22:28

Back in the 80s my GP messed around like yours has and I ended up in a diabetic coma!

Go back and demand that they do a finger prick. Better still, do you know anyone who has diabetes who can do one for you?

If he starts being sick go straight to A&E! Is he tired and thirsty too? Cos I was extremely thirsty and too tired to do anything.

tangarine · 21/06/2014 22:35

Any news OP?

Please don't rely on a urine test - DS1's was clear of glucose because it was so dilute. A few days later he almost died through undiagnosed diabetes. We were told later at the hospital that it was not unusual for a urine test to be clear in the early stages. As other posters have said, you need a finger-tip prick test.

tangarine · 21/06/2014 22:36

(sorry, not trying to alarm you, but I wouldn't want anyone else to be in the same situation as we were)

Edenviolet · 21/06/2014 22:39

You need to get a test done TODAY

It is a quick and simple finger prick but you need to know now and if it is diabetes get treated. I don't want to alarm you but my dd was unwell and misdiagnosed with a uti in dec 12, a week went by before diabetes was diagnosed and she was very sick.

Please please don't wait, get checked ASAP and good luck xx

Sixweekstowait · 21/06/2014 23:10

I cannot believe the behaviour of the doctor. If nothing has happened since you posted, wake your child up and go to a and e immediately. I am trying to alarm you - if it is diabetes, it is life threatening if not treated swiftly.

millymae · 21/06/2014 23:41

I can't believe it either - the Registrar who may have been brilliant wasn't up to much in my opinion (sorry) - it surely wouldn't have been beyond him or someone else in the surgery to have done an initial simple finger prick blood test there and then. My 3 year old who sees my OH test his blood every day knows exactly how to do it and I can't believe that things are so bad in the NHS that they don't have the necessary equipment on the premises. Also whoever booked that appointment and told you it was the first available one deserves to be disciplined - they should have realised the implications of having to wait so long and made an emergency appointment for you.

In your shoes I'd take him to a children's A & E dept - sooner rather than later

Edenviolet · 22/06/2014 06:46

The nhs is that bad. For some reason when we took dd to 2 different GPS and a and e with symptoms of diabetes and glucose in urine they didn't do finger prick and I've heard of it happening to others.

Really hope OP has managed to get her ds tested

kpandthesunshineband2 · 23/06/2014 12:01

Agree with the above. My ds started weeing lots one day , then overnight felt like needing to wee but not much there. Took to GP expecting cystitis.
She did urine dipstick - lots of glucose & ketones - likely diagnosis Type 1 diabetes - sent immediately to hospital where diagnosis confirmed.
Forever gateful to GP that she did the right thing & we had a relatively uneventful diagnosis.
Please make sure someone does a urine test or fingerprick test for glucose today if you are no furher forward.

RidgyTipper · 23/06/2014 12:05

TODAY OP! I have two siblings with T1. It is one of my abiding childhood motors seeing my sister fitting and then going into a coma.

RidgyTipper · 23/06/2014 12:06

Motors? Memories! Please get him checked today. Please

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 23/06/2014 12:07

Did you get him seen OP?

All GP surgeries have blood sugar machines, there's no reason they couldn't have done it there.

Edenviolet · 24/06/2014 22:13

Any news op?

Ohnonotagen · 24/06/2014 22:24

hi sorry was away at weekend so only just read replies. Sorry to alarm everyone with my posting i was feeling abit emotional. Doc doesn't think he necessarily does have diabetes but wants to rule it out, she did a urine test but it was clear but wants a blood test to check.

He has seemed not so bad the last couple of days, not been going to loo as much but still had a couple of accidents, but more where he's just had abit come too quickly before he got to loo. TBH my gut feeling at this point in time is that there is nothing physically wrong but obviously we want to rule this out. Have been keeping a close key on him (and told pre school) so obviously if he is showing signs of getting worse i'll take him back to docs or A&E (is there anything in particuar to look out for which would be a worrying sign??)

The losing weight thing, he's not lost masses but has gone very skinny and seems to be short compared to the other children, wheras when he was a baby he was on the 90th percentile for weight. However all of his dads family are naturally very thin so it could be that he is growing into this way.

Edenviolet · 24/06/2014 22:34

Diabetes couldbe ruled out or confirmed immediately by a blood sugar test and your gp should have done this! Somebody needs to perform this test ASAP if diabetes is suspected.

Do you know anybody with a bg meter? Or could you buy one, follow the instructions and see what the result is. Normal levels in a non diabetic can be between approx 4-7.5 if above that go to the gp or hospital again. You really need to get this checked.

Good luck

Ohnonotagen · 24/06/2014 22:42

i think you can get it checked in the chemist, will get my mum to take him
