My friends little boy has just been diagnosed and although the NHS has been fantastic I don't know how to best support her.

Food is obviously a huge issue and was thinking I could clue myself up as to what would be low carb and good diabetes snacks to have when he is over?

Can I get ice lolly moulds and use sugar free jelly to freeze?

If you have a diabetic kid, can you come talk to me please?

Low carb snacks - meat, cheese, veg. Ds2 likes carrot sticks and cheese when he is high. Breadsticks aren't bad.

The most useful thing is to keep packets though - your friend will be counting his carbs and giving him insulin. He shouldn't have to avoid all cake and sweets.

The little individual packs of hairdo are 10g which is just right if he has low blood sugar. And not horrendous for a snack or treat, either.

The other thing to note is that diabetes is awfully random. Don't ask her why he is high or low, or what will happen next. It's like people asking you why your baby is crying!

Oh, support. If you can, if she is willing, learn alongside her. Then you can BABYSIT. (Gold-dust to anyone, but diamond-encrusted gold-dust when your child has a medical condition)

Can't really add much to Jelly's advice - all brilliant advice.
It is great you are wanting to support her as it is such a huge learning curve for the family of a T1. If you can learn a bit alongside her that is fantastic support - often friends & family really don't get just how all encompassing it is .
