Help diagnosing 14mo DS

scarecrow22 · 07/06/2014 16:13

DS is 14mo. He had reflux early, which got notably less severe c 4-5mo, but he continued bringing up milk for quite a while after weaning. This seemed to segue c 10mo into constipation, which at the time I put down to an increase in formula (I was still bf at home) and/or an emotional reaction to starting 3 days a week at the childminder when it returned to work. That was in Feb, and eventually the poo softened but he was still very distressed trying to poo, often straining and whimpering on and off all day with no result, then screaming when he did poo. About a month ago (after he'd turned one and had been full switched from formula to cows milk for a couple of weeks) I took him to GP who prescribed Movicol. It worked, but he hated it and almost stopped drinking. I stopped putting it in drinks and switched to food. Then over the last couple of weeks or so he gradually stopped eating as much. For a week or more he's eaten amounts like one small animal biscuit, six mini Cheddars and a dessert spoon of Apple pure. Initially he was drinking more and more milk (morning, afternoon, bedtime, 1-2 bottles a night), then a few days ago he vomited prolifically including what looked like half a chicken fillet but I think was curdled/congealed milk. Now he hardly wants milk either, possibly half a bottle a day, and twice he has vomited the milk straight back up. He drinks lots of water. In fact is quasi desperate for it.

In the background he's had what feel like almost continuous colds and coughs, and tbh even when he is well his breathing always sounds chesty. When his temp has spiked I've taken him to GP but chest always deemed fine.

Sorry that's a long tedious history. I'm just concerned there's something underlying if not all then a group of these problems. Note is hugely serious but I'm getting very worn by the refusal to eat now, the endless pooing drama (I have a 3.5yo dd as well who has started getting upset and playing up) and the significant increase in the night wakings for the last few weeks (up to four times a night). Plus most of all I feel he's troubled but can't ask him why.

Am I making too much of normal baby stuff, or might there be something I should get investigated?

Thank you to anyone who has attempted to read this.

Cow's milk protein allergy has got to be top of the list in terms of possibilities. Poor you alll - sounds fairly difficult.

Agree that cows milk protein allergy or intolerance could be an issue here. You really need a referral to a Paed and some proper allergy testing. There is some good info on allergy uk. They also have a helpline Smile

Has he ever been checked for tongue tie. That might worth eliminating.

scarecrow22 · 08/06/2014 16:36

ooh you're good Jilted Wink Hr had tongue tie cut at a few weeks. But guess that rules that out now.... Thanks.for.advice and links. Will follow up. I just have a sense something's not eight even though not very serious. Support much appreciated.

Hi sounds very similar to what we are going through. Reflux and silent reflux now possible breast milk intolerance so I am on a dairy free diet.
Id make an app with your GP first thing tomorrow and ask for an emergency referral to paediatrician.
We are on day 3 of dairy free diet and there has been a very slight difference in upset/distressed/pain periods but still severe vomiting.
Good luck. I really feel for you, its just awful knowing something isnt right but we just dont know what.
(Ps: ask for medication for bowels that is smaller quantity, movicol is a lot for a little one to drink) xx

Thanks Jilted and LB. He's eating a bit more, but all the other longer term issues there, and he vomited milk again. I dread the GP thinking I'm a paranoid or lazy mum, but I will channel your support and take him! It's good to hear from others experiencing similar symptoms (wish you weren't, but if you are it helps me, iyswim).

Hi did you manage to get to docs today? How has he been today?
We have had an awful day. Screaming after every feed in pain. Its horrendous. At docs tomorrow for Imms so will push for another hosp app.

scarecrow22 · 09/06/2014 19:56

cestlavie will Google those after this. Thank you.
LB thanks for asking Thanks He was at childminder so was spared! He didn't vomit milk tonight but hardly drank any. He's eating a bit now - enough to sustain him I guess. Last night not great but had worse! I have a pre-arranged doctor's appointment this Weds so am going to wait til that. Do let me know what yours says. Genuinely interested.
