Osteopathy- has it made reflux worse?

Hi all

My 9 week old DD suffers with reflux. She saw an osteopath on Saturday who was very thorough in her assessment and also picked up breast feeding latch problem (which I didn't tell her about) and a preference to hold her head in one direction.
Everything the said added up and made sense and she worked on DD's upper back, neck and jaw joints. She didn't do anything to her head do I assume it wouldn't be termed cranial osteopathy.
I know that babies after get worse before better, but if last night was anything to go by I didn't realise how much worse! She screamed clearly in agony for nearly 2 hrs, she went rigid, arched her back, and got so hot and sweaty I ended up stripping her. Only then with cuddles did she calm enough to feed and then sleep.
This morning she was a bit like it again but I was able to settle her within 15 mins or so, abd again this afternoon. I've also noticed that she's more dribbly than before (she was slightly dribbly anyway- don't think it's teeth but you never know). I've been giving her her Ranitidine regularly, but she just seems unsettled.

So my question is, did anyone else have these experiences? I'm told it should only be worse for a day or two if it's going to get worse, so hopefully things will improve now. But the prospect of another evening like yesterday is horrible. Also we 're booked in for another treatment on Friday but I'm nervous about it if it's going to cause these problems.

Thanks in advance for any shared experiences!

Is this serious? Hmm

Reflux has nothing to do with the skeleton, so why on earth would you take your baby to an osteopath?

What exactly do you expect the osteopath's magic hands to do about the immaturity of your baby's digestive system?

Osteopathy is only supported by evidence in helping with lower back problems. It can't have any impact on the stomach.

Cranial osteopathy has no evidence behind it at all.

Sorry, but it was a bit irresponsible to take a baby for osteopathy...osteopathy is not a form of medicine, is not proven to be at all effective, and has killed at least one baby and seriously injured others. I would certainly cancel your next appointment and perhaps take your baby to the GP to make sure that she is ok in terms of any digestive issues or reflux, and that she hasn't been injured by the osteopath.

Just because they didn't "manipulate" the head area doesn't mean it wasn't "cranial" as they use this term in reference to the "cranial rhythm" nothing to do with the head.

Hope your little one is ok and the underlying cause gets treated. I know myself that it's all too easy to get sucked into quack treatment options when your little one is poorly.

CoteDAzur, I don’t know if you’re still on here or not given this is a really old thread but I just wanted to say what an absolute condescending and rude d*ck you are! Cranial osteopathy is used by many and there is lots of evidence to show its effectiveness. Osteopathy helps many areas, including the diaphragm. A tight diaphragm, from being breech in the womb for example, can worsen reflux. Reflux is not simply about an immature digestive system!

And MissRatty, you’re so much worse! What you wrote is utter tripe! There has never been a death of a baby caused by osteopathy. Go and do some bloody (proper) research before trying to scare a poor mum to death with your nonsense!
