Received a letter from hospital today, a copy of what has been sent to GP following sleep study. I understand that they are going to send DS for tonsillectomy but don't understand two parts specifically. Can anyone shed any light on what the following means? -

The oxygen saturation was 97%. There was at least one desaturation without movement.
Is that good or bad or very bad? I understand what oxygen saturation is, but no idea what level is good.

Also the letter states - the results of the oximetry did not contra indicate surgery to a district general hospital.
Does this mean it will be done at the same hospital as te investigation, as it was mentioned we may be transferred to another hospital with a bigger/better paediatric department.

TIA

It means that he had one desaturation, does it say what to? So the sats monitor measures your oxygen levels, 100% is the best, anythjng below about 92% we tend to give oxygen. 97% is fine.

Sleep apnoea can cause desaturations (meaning the numbers will drop) as you're essentially obstructing your airway. Lots of things can cause the machine to show a drop in number, wriggling, the probe falling off. I expect if they've said if he wasn't moving it probably a true desat. One desat really isn't much at all, depending on what it dropped to, I see children that desat the entire night and are so noisy!

It also means they aren't concerned about your child having surgery at your local as his sleep study didn't show anything significant to indicate otherwise.

In other words, it was ok.

Thank you.
We were originally referred because of concerns with the size of his tonsils. I think they had already made the decision to take them out, the sleep study was really to see where they were going to do it.

I'm pleased it's not too bad though!
