DS is 2.8 and two weeks ago weighed 40 pounds.

I haven't changed his diet or noticed a change in his appetite but I weighed him today and he is 38 pounds so he has lost 2 pounds in 2 weeks.

I haven't noticed anything wrong with him apart from the fact that he seems to be more upset than usual over minor things.

Should I be concerned?

It isn't my scales as I also weigh DS2 on them and I weighed them on different scales and they are accurate.

Do you normally weigh your children so regularly?

I would imagine that as long as he is eating well, playing normally, and healthy then there is no problem. I think people do have "blips" in their weight...

BlondieBrownie · 30/05/2014 12:58

I don't usually but he was playing with the scales so I put him on there as he likes to see the numbers flash up on the screen, I usually weigh them both monthly.

There can be differences between scales?

I don't weigh mine at all, except of I'm worried about them. I would say that in the absence of any concern, illness, change in clothing or appearance I'd let it go.

Oakmaiden · 30/05/2014 13:03

Maybe check again in a month, and see if there is any change? If he had lost weight again I would then start to be concerned...

PluggyMug · 30/05/2014 13:04

Sorry my message isn't clear - re the scales I meant there could be a difference between them from the last time and now or if you weighed him on different scales last time.

BlondieBrownie · 30/05/2014 16:02

Thank you for your replies, I will weigh him again in a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

40lb is a lot for a 2.8 year old surely? It's more than my 5 year old weighs. I doubt anyone is going to worry about a second lower reading!

candycoatedwaterdrops · 31/05/2014 09:26

I agree with tobysmum that sounds like quite a lot for a under 3 year old to weigh.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 31/05/2014 09:28

Ooops posted too soon, he's probably on the upper scale for his age, so I wouldn't worry if he's lost weight. Maybe losing his toddler chub?

tmae · 31/05/2014 10:31

40lbs is 99.6th centile for younger than 2 1/2 so depending on the OP's son's height it may not be that he is chubby

tobysmum77 · 31/05/2014 12:28

I have no idea tmae I am just saying I can't see a gp panicking about him not weighing enough!

BlondieBrownie · 31/05/2014 13:15

He is in the middle of the line between the 91st centile and the 98th centile and was measured by the HV not too long ago for his development check and she said that he is in proportion. He is a very tall boy and he always gets mistaken for someone twice his age.

He has always been above the 98th centile when he was younger.

40lbs isn't between the 91st and 98th percentile its over 18kg. It's your scales op stop weighing your child!

tobysmum77 · 31/05/2014 18:41

and in terms of dropping down from 98th if that's what you are worried about he should. I am 176cm tall which on the girls chart at 20 is 98th percentile. I weigh 69 kg which is between 91st and 75th (at 20!) my bmi is normal (22.5) I would be v overweight if my weight was also 98th.

As they get older tall children should not be the same weight centile as height, it's different when babies/ very young toddlers. The charts are distorted at the top by overweight children and at the bottom by underweight.

A friends daughter was 98th for both in reception and she was on the borderline for obese with bmi percentiles. relax, the hv says all is well so it is.
