5 yr old ds has had really bad breath over the last couple of days, he has good oral hygiene, brushes twice a day. Last dental check up all was well. I have been checking his brushing every time... Back to drs or dentist?

Have you checked his tonsils? Look for little white spots aka tonsillitis. Causes horrible breath!

Does he ever have tonsillitis? Tonsil stones can be a bit wiffy if they build up.

Also, my dd had a habit of putting things up her nose, and it getting stuck. Both times, she had funky breath.

Definitely nothing up his nose, checked his throat tonsils look ok and he's not complaining of a sore throat at all. It is so smelly, I recoiled!

Recent research has found that bad breath in healthy mouths can be due to bacteria on tongue. Try getting him to brush his tongue.
In children most bad breath is due to mucus stagnating in their flat sinuses. Drainage is poor because of the shape of the sinus (flat) and the drainage hole is located at the top of the sinus. As the face grows the drainage improves and they have less problems with smelly breath.
Enlarged adenoids can also restrict drainage at the back of the nose rather than tonsils. Unless he is suffering repeated ear infections and/or glue ear not much will be done.
If you are concerned have your dentist check his mouth. The smell associated with blocked nasal passages is very distinct from that of gum disease or poor oral hygiene.
