Eye colour. I'm confused...

DH is green eyed, I am brown - not really sure.

We have 6 DC: ds1 - Green eyes, dd2 - brown eyes, dd2 & ds4 still have blue eyes (7mo old act).

My question or confusion, really, is related to our ID (mcma) twins they are almost 21mo old. One of the twins were at A&E today because he got something in his eye and needed to be washed out, and checked out (he's scratched his eye) while there the nurse made a passing comment how "pretty and unusual" the twins' eyes were, I just thought they were just hazel but after having a closer look they both have half green and half brown eyes. Each eye has two colours and their are definitely not just hazel.

Will they stay like this? Will they turn hazel or green this late? Is it that unusual or something to be concerned about? I had no idea it could happen and slightly confused of how it's come about...

Dunno. DS1 is 3.7 and his eyes are brown in the middle and blue round the edge. If you look at him side on his eyes look blue and straight on, brown. I have no idea what to tell people if they ever ask what colour eyes he has. They have been slowly changing since about a 10 months old when they were dark blue.

I always thought brown was the dominant eye colour.
My eyes are green, my dh's and dc's have brown eyes.

It can't be that simple though.....

Hazel eyes are brown in the middle and green farther out, I'm confused, what do you think hazel is?

It isn't :)

There used to be a geneticist on MN, Tamum, who kept explaining how it worked. There are more than blue or brown genes involved.

ThatBloodyWoman · 26/05/2014 18:49

Knew it...

MultipleMama · 26/05/2014 18:49

Their eyes are half and half, not brown with green round the edges, or in patches. They literally have a green half and a brown half (green|brown)

Sounds cool, doubt they'll change though apparently a minority of people have some change to their colouring during teenage years.

I have blue/grey eyes. They almost reflect the colours around me if that makes sense?! I honestly don't know what colour they truly are. Blush
Dd1 had grey/green eyes, but dd2 has grey with hazel around the iris. I noticed the other day that her right eye is significantly more brown than the left a la David Bowie! She is 4mo, and I do wonder of they'll stay that way.
DH has brown, almost black eyes at first glance. (Once you get close you see flashes of green!) so I'm surprised they have not got the same. I think there are a lot of people with mixed coloured eyes, you don't necessarily notice it until you get close.

I've never heard that tinkerbell I thought hazel was light brown.

My dp has brown/green eyes.

DoctorHfuhruhurr · 26/05/2014 19:03

My cousin has green eyes, one eye has one quarter brown. Exactly half and half in both eyes in both twins is super cool :)

MultipleMama · 26/05/2014 19:06

Yeah from a distance or just looking at them they just look brown but when you look closely you can see the difference.

Trying to google and hardly having any luck but just found this picture and their eyes are like this but vertical...

MultipleMama · 26/05/2014 19:16

So it's nothing to worry about just normal eye colouring?

Although not split colour, my son had bright blue eyes until he was 2, since then they have slowly changed from blue, to green, to light brown, and have now at 8 years old have settled to dark brown. So their eye colour could still change dramatically yet.

MultipleMama · 26/05/2014 22:30

Ahh, thanks. One twin has it more than the other but now I've notice I can't help but see it every time I look at them now. I'll mention it to their Ped at their next jabs. Just confused as I've never noticed it before and DH is just as baffled x

If you have never noticed it before, maybe their eyes are just changing colour. Eyes are strange!
