Am I being PFB or should we go the GP?

DS has just turned four months and this is the first time he's been poorly since home from hospital. He has a temp of 37.7, a cough and gunky eyes. He had congenital pneumonia which although fully recovered from has probably made me paranoid.

Should I take him to the walk in centre tonight, the GP tomorrow or just monitor him closely at home? Any advice appreciated.

Is calpol bringing temp down? I would take him tonight if it were me but I'm a worrier by nature

If you're worried speak to 111 or go to walk-in. No sense in staying home worrying. Don't want to leave it until the middle of the night when everything's more difficult.

DD2 had pneumonia at 13 months. She is now 3.5, whilst I may be a bit cavalier about the health of the 2 other DC we are very careful with DD2. I would rather be told everything is fine than the opposite.

Incidentally, I have NEVER been told I should not have gone to walk in centre except when they thought I should have gone to GP, but they had no appointments.

How quickly should his temperature come down after Calpol? It hasn't yet but I might be being impatient.

Thank you for not telling me I'm over reacting. I think we will head to the walk in centre to be on the safe side.

He's quite young - I'd take him to the drop in if that's an option. Don't think twice about them thinking you're being pfb - they won't - they take high temps in tiny ones seriously.

Miriam Stoppard's advice re fevers.

I will call the walk in centre and check they treat children, according to the NHS website not all do which I find strange.

He was in intensive care for a couple of weeks when he was born so I am very nervous about his health. Thanks for the reassurance, I wish babies came with a manual, it's really hard to know what's normal or not.

After responding to you earlier, I realised that DD2 has a temp. I gave her Nurofen an hour and a quarter ago and her temp has dropped from 38.7 to 38.2

If it doesn't come down soon I'll piggy back some Calpol on top of the Nurofen

missmargot · 20/05/2014 21:35

Hope your DD is feeling better soon

We went to the Walk In Centre and they were lovely, saw DS within 10 minutes and checked him out thoroughly- oxygen levels, chest etc. They are confident that it's a virus and nothing ominous but we have a list of further symptoms to look out for and prescriptions for paracetamol and eye drops. They said to always get him checked because of his medical history and we did the right thing going.

Thanks for all the advice.

Glad they confirmed you were correct to follow your instincts.

A dose of Calpol on top of the Nurofen was enough to sort out the temp. She is now running around being a pain
