Anyone have any experience of sedation for dental procedure?

Dd2 needs a tooth out and a filling and has been booked in the week after next to be sedated (she's 7 but is petrified of the dentist due to previous bad experience)
I've been told she's not to eat or drink 6 hours before hand (it will be at lunchtime)
How was your child after sedation? How Long until they were back to themselves? And how long until they are allowed to play and do everything as normal (she will be off school the following day but will she be ok for the day after?
TIA if you do reply, I'm so nervous but trying not to let dd see that I am

My son was gassed for extraction - honestly he came round and was bouncing off the walls within about 15 mins, me on the other hand was traumatised for days ......

notapizzaeater · 19/05/2014 13:48

And he was back in school the next day

Tenderlike · 19/05/2014 14:02

notapizzaeater oh poor you But glad your ds was ok, did he complain of any pain or anything at all afterwards?
Dd can get a bit stroppy so I'm a bit worried about when she comes round
She usually does trampolining and gymnastics on the day she's due back at school so I'm a bit worried about letting her go,

No he wasn't in pain at all (and he could win oscars for pain !!) he was perfectly fine within an hour with no ill effects at all.

notapizzaeater · 19/05/2014 17:21

And he had 4 out at once ConfusedAngry. He'd got a huge abscess on his gum and his front teeth where wearing out and getting infected but no signs of big teeth coming so they whipped them out

DS had sedation last year at 5yrs, he woke said he felt like he was on a roundabout, then about 1/2 hour later was fine. He did say i hurt a bit afterwards but think it was for the sympathy vote.

weatherall · 19/05/2014 21:34

What exactly happens with sedati

weatherall · 19/05/2014 21:35

Sedation?

Do they just put a gas mask on and pass out?

grumpalumpgrumped · 19/05/2014 21:38

Ds had a canula and magic milk (as they called it), went out similar to a GA but woke quicker

BananaPie · 19/05/2014 21:44

I had gas for an extraction as a child. They put the mask on and asked me to count. I remember becoming quite confused as it took effect, and being absolutely convinced that the dentist was trying to kill me. I kicked him and the nurse ended up holding my legs down. Next thing I remember is being woken up from a nice dream. I felt quite sick and dizzy afterwards and threw up in the car on the way home, but was fine the next day.

notapizzaeater · 19/05/2014 22:08

They gassed him out and put a cannula in whilst asleep. (He's needle phobic)

weatherall · 20/05/2014 14:35

Can adults get it in that order?

I'm more needle phobic than dentist phobic and have been avoiding treatment for 2 years.

My DS (7) had 3 teeth out last month. He had a horrid half hour or so after he woke, where he felt woozy and tearful, and kept complaining about the numbness in his mouth. Half an hour after that, he was feeling much better, and two hours later it was like nothing had happened. He was fine for school the next day too.

ipswichwitch · 20/05/2014 14:48

I had sedation for wisdom tooth extraction as an adult (I have a really nasty gag reflex) and it was amazing. I virtually skipped out of the dentists, wittering on about how fabulous the whole experience was to the entire waiting room Grin
I really don't remember anything that happened so that was great considering they said they had loads of bother getting the tooth out.

kentishgirl · 20/05/2014 14:50

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out in one go under sedation. It's great. Didn't remember a thing. Talked a certain amount of shit when I was coming round.

Google David after dentist Grin

CalamityKate1 · 20/05/2014 15:09

I used to be terrified of the dentist, esp extractions.
Then I had a couple under sedation. It was bloody lovely. A nice sleep and a combination of drugs and just sheer relief at it being all over meant that I woke up full of gratitude and love for the dentist and nurse.
I shambled out beaming, lightly supported by an eye rolling DH.
I'm so brave now I don't need sedation anymore :)

Tenderlike · 20/05/2014 17:23

Thanks everyone, you have put my mind at ease!
I believe some dentists will refer you to be sedated if you have phobias, not sure how much it costs but obviously worth it if you are in pain

Hi. I am a dentist and treat patients with sedation routinely.

Its very straightforward. There is a mask which sits on patients nose through which they breathe the gas which makes them v sleepy and relaxed.

Then we can do whatever treatment is needed

At the end 100% oxygen is given for two mins so all nitrous gas is flushed out of system. If my patients are seen in morning they are fine to go straight back to school in afternoon.

Feel free to pm me if u want more info

Tenderlike · 20/05/2014 19:59

Thanks yummy
Dd is down to have it via IV
With regards to the no eating how flexible is that...if I wake dd up a little early she could have a Weetabix or yoghurt but it will be about 5 hours before, and is weak squash ok up to 2 hours before?
I'm glad to hear all the reports of people/Dcs feeling well within a few hours!!

Also I was going to ring the dentist tomorrow but may aswell ask here, dd has had a cold, over the worst of it now but still slightly there, will they still go ahead (I know with GA they are quite strict)

OP posts:
yummytummy · 20/05/2014 20:46

Ah my advice is for inhalation sedation ie gas and air I dont know much about iv. I wd check about the eating and stick with what they have advised.

Also recovery may be a little longer than for gas probably by next day

Def check about the cold too ur right as they can be strict about these things

How old is dd as iv is usually only for over 12 if she is 7 then more likely to be gas

Were u given any leaflets with information?

Tenderlike · 20/05/2014 21:08

It's definitely iv as states on letter
It was a phone call(not my local dentist) so advice was no food 6 hours
I'll give them a ring tomorrow but Thank you Thanks
