Clenil - what dose is usual?

Sorry me again!

DS (5) has had his clenil upped to 400 micrograms per day,and the leaflet says this is the usual max dose (however it also says on ventolin no more than 4 puffs a day?!)

What happens if they need more than this?

Is is 4, he was on clenil 400mg at about 2.5 he was also on montelukast at that point. He was also given a slow release preventer at the same time which I can't remember the name of. That still didn't work though.

Since coming off the clenil we have tried a few different drugs/doses and are still trying to get the right combination but at the moment he takes -

Seretide 125 two puffs twice a day
Montelukast 4mg once a day
Delortadine 2.5ml daily
nasacort spray
ventolin (prescribed fro 5 puffs morning, night and before exercise and as and when needed)

He is seeing his consultant next month as things are still not controlled enough but much better than when he was on the clenil.

There are lots of options out there its just a case of finding the right combiation to work for him. If he under a consultant?

Thanks. He is not under consultant, asthma been pretty stable but less so over last 6 mths. Not under a consultant, have private health care through work, so could do this if needed. Is it necessary do you think?

I would probably see if this increased dose works then if not push for a refferal. Hope it works for him though

Thanks Sirzy,

Been back to GP today as was awful this weekend and wanted to check not on chest.

They have upped his dose to 4 x 100 in am and 4 x 100 pm, for a week instead of pred. This is over the maximum dose? Have you heard of this?

Hi I'm asthmatic as is my daughter. Does your child have a regular asthma check up?

We are both on maximum doses of steroid inhalers at the moment. It's normal to increase the dose and key trigger points are having a cold/respiratory infection, allergies eg hay fever. I suspect that there may be a number if environmental triggers around at the moment at higher temps usually mean more pollen and pollution. My asthma has gone from being well controlled to poorly controlled in the last few weeks.

The normal first line of treatment when uncontrolled is to increase the normal steroid inhaler. If that doesn't work then other meds can be added in. For my daughter that's usually montelukast and for me prednisolone. I'd expect the GP to try these options at least before referring. It might also be worth considering adding an antihistamine

One thing to be aware of is that depending on where you are, private medical treatment can be difficult to find.
