Hi. Again. DS2 has glue ear, and been having recurrent infections. Another this w/e, started Friday, spoke to 111 then for guidance, and a trip to out if hours yesterday for (yet more) antibiotics. When they looked at him then he had 1 perforation and the other pink and swollen. He's very distressed again this eve. Have given 5ml of baby ibuprofen - when an I give calpol? 20mins after or 2hrs? Any other suggestions to relieve pain? Heard a warm flannel to the ear - but he fights it. Anything else you can suggest?

Put a warm, barely damp facecloth against you and put him against it-rather than other way round iykwim. Heat and pressure should help a little. Keep him upright-the pain will be worse if he lies down. It's hard to watch them I'm pain-and ear ache is very painful!

It's heartbreaking...

You can give calpol and ibuprofen together as they are from different groups of pain killers.

However best thing to do is stagger them so you're giving something regularly, as long as you don't give more than 4 doses of calpol and 3 of brufen in a 24 period.

DS used to suffer with ear ache-he has permanent damage due to the number of times his ear drums ruptured. He was a silent sufferer-very quiet, very still-which made it easy to underestimate the severity. I remember once I was sitting on floor beside sofa where he was quietly lying watching tv. I noticed patch of blood/pus beside his head and asked if his ear was sore. "not any more" was his reply!
Have just asked him (he's now 16!) if he remembered what helped the pain and he backs up what I remember, heat and pressure. Lying on the "warm thing" and having me gently hug his head into the heat. Hope things improve soon.

Thanks again. He's finally gone to sleep on OH. But was crying for over 90mins. Think he's just blown himself out. Am concerned about the number of infections and sheer volume of antibiotics he's had over last few weeks. Will take him to see GP tomorrow to review - again. Part of the problem is he hasn't seem the same Dr twice during this time....
