2 year old with persistent watering eye

He's just turned two, and has had one watering eye for months, if not longer. It doesn't bother him, and I've never thought it needed medical attention, and that it would resole itself over time.

However, I did a search on here, and now I'm panicked that it's a blocked tear duct which should have been operated on before eighteen months, as the growth and hardening of the nasal bones mean it is a much more complicated surgery after that age.

Should I seek immediate medical advice, and has anyone else a child older than eighteen months with one watering eye? Or who has had the tear duct surgery?

Any advice welcome. I feel terrible that I've failed him, and horrified at the thought of surgery.

My two children had blocked tear ducts from birth, with DD's worse than DS's. Every time she had a mild cold her eyes would gunge up and in between her eyes would stream a lot. DS's only gunge up when he has a bad infection and he has very little eye streaming. The gp was reluctant to have the surgery done on DD as in the majority of cases she had treated the child's growth solved the problem naturally and she felt the general anastethic (sp?) was an unnecessary risk. And she was right! DD had her first clear winter this year (aged 3.5yrs) and DS was dramatically better too (1.5yrs). If you're concerned go to your gp for an opinion, but if the only symptom is a runny eye and it's not regularly infected, I would hope your DS will grow out of it.

my ds has had dry eyes a couple of times which makes them watery and sore. Could it be a dry eye?
