DS's nails are peeling and breaking (1.10yrs)

In the last month I've noticed that DS's finger nails are peeling/breaking/lifting really low down, some of them almost at the cuticle. toe nails are fine, they are like steel It's hard to describe, but it's like if you were wearing press on fake nails and when they are getting loose, if you press the tip and the bottom bit lifts up (if that makes sense). He has a good varied diet, lots of milk, cheese and yoghurt, so I don't think he's calcium deficient, and other than them catching in his sleeves and pulling, they don't seem to bother or cause him pain. There is no bruising or discoloration on the nail or nail bed. He has an appointment with the gp next week for something else so I'll ask about it then, but just wondering if anyone has experienced this or have any suggestions? Thanks.

It could be a fungal nail infection OP.

I would mention it to the GP when you visit.

Thanks, I never would have thought of that. I will avoid asking Dr Google but add it to the list for the gp.

Same happened to my dcs.

what helped was by taking them completely off dairy and up the green veg intake.
He'll get plenty of calcium without dairy, on veg and fruit, as they do in the Far East.

He's obviously, to me at least, dairy intolerant. No milk, yoghurt, cheese or ice cream, and up his veg, see how it goes. Worked wonders for us.

Would it take this long for a dairy intolerance to become obvious? He has been having milk for nearly a year, some formula before that and I wasn't dairy free when bf and he's never had any vomiting or reflux problems. The children I know with dairy intolerance reacted at a very young age to breast milk, but maybe they were particularly sensitive?

Has he had hand foot and mouth in the last month? That happened to my son but is (according to google) quite a common side effect.

Interesting, popcorn. He's had hfm twice in the last year, both mild doses, but the last was probably 3 months ago.
