baby has been caughing for more than a month now

Hi,

my DS (9 month) has had a caugh for more than a month now - since the 31st March precisely (I know this because it was the last day of my maternity leave). Since then, it had almost disappeared a couple of times, got worse a couple of times, but never quite left. At the moment, it is worst in the morning and sounds like dry caugh.
We've been to the docs a few times during this time, for this and other reasons:

  • no chest infection (he had two in February)
  • mid April he had some antibiotics because he also had conjunctivitis and an ear infection
  • huge feeding problems in the first part of April (I posted about this) when his system was so totally congested - lots of swallowing problems and vomiting out food due to caughing. Luckily, this now seems sorted (although we had a bit of a breakfast accident this morning, but no other accidents for a while)
  • last week he had a viral rash - when we went to the docs he diagnosed an upper respiratory tract infection

Has anybody else's baby had a caugh to last that long? Anything I can do? He has started nursery in April, so that certainly hasn't helped...

Any advice appreciated!

back to the dr...

back to the doc. If they can't tell if there is chest infection ask for an Xray, there may be an undetected infection. I wouldn't let a cough go on for too long.

Well, we did go back to the DR last night... to A&E to be exact. After coming home from nursery, he had such a hoarse voice he was barely able to cry. He also sounded very wheezy.

He then woke up at 11pm and his breething sounded odd... not necessarily struggling to breathe, but I would have been worried about going to bed in another room.

Four hours at A&E (home at 3 am) and lo and behold, it's croup!

He has got a dose of steroids, and sounded better this morning. I do hope that, when this episode is over, the cough is finally gone for good!!!
